Social Aspects Of Road Transport

The Seminar, held in Paris in December 1998, was a forum for discussion of four topics: working condition, access to and future of the profession, economic stakes and the role and limits of public authorities.

Transport Sociology: Social Aspects of Transport Planning focuses on the importance of an efficient transport plan in ensuring order in neighborhoods and social functions, as well as management and control of the environmental impacts of transport systems in communities and cities. The manuscript first offers information on the relationship of social impacts and infrastructure and a neighborhood protest of an urban highway in Brookline-Elm. Transportation research has traditionally been dominated by engineering and logistics research approaches. This book integrates social, economic, and behavioral sciences into the transportation field. As its title indicates, emphasis is on socioeconomic changes, which increasingly govern the development of the transportation sector. The papers presented here originated at a conference on Social Change and Sustainable Transport held at the University of California at Berkeley in March 1999, under the auspices of the European Science Foundation and the National Science Foundation. The contributors, who represent a range of disciplines, including geography and regional science, economics, political science, sociology, and psychology, come from twelve different countries. Examines labour and social issues arising from problems of cross-border mobility of international drivers in the road transport sector with an emphasis on promoting HIV/AIDS prevention, non-discrimination, visa issues, improving the efficiency and effectiveness of cross-border road transport operations and the living and working conditions of international drivers.

How can we design transport environments that cater to the situation awareness needs of different end-users? This book answers this question by showcasing how state-of-the-art human factors theory and methods can be used to understand how situation awareness differs across drivers, cyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians and creates new designs that cater to these diverse situation awareness needs. Mobility is fundamental to economic and social activities such as commuting, manufacturing, or supplying energy. Each movement has an origin, a potential set of intermediate locations, a destination, and a nature which is linked with geographical attributes. Transport systems composed of infrastructures, modes and terminals are so embedded in the socio-economic life of individuals, institutions and corporations that they are often invisible to the consumer. This is paradoxical as the perceived invisibility of transportation is derived from its efficiency. Understanding how mobility is linked with geography is main the purpose of this book.
