Social Inclusion And Education In India

This book examines social inclusion in the education sector in India for scheduled tribes (ST), denotified tribes and nomadic tribes. It investigates the gaps between what was promised to the marginalized sections in the constitution, and what has since been delivered. The volume: • Examines data from across the Indian states on ST and non-ST students in higher, primary and secondary education; • Analyses the success and failures of education policy at the central and state level; • Brings to the fore colonial roots of social exclusion in education. From Special to Inclusive Education in India: Case Studies of Three Schools in Delhi focuses on the growing international interest in inclusive education and on how to offer equal education to all children regardless of their needs, or their social, cultural and economic backgrounds. With the number of private schools that admit children identified with special needs, particularly of the non-physical and non-sensory categories, as a part of "integrated" or "inclusive" education, increasing in India, the challenges of inclusive education in India are also many. The concerns that require attention involve the inclusion of children with disabilities and special needs, those from socially and economically disadvantaged groups and from diverse cultural and linguistic groups, and those alienated in classrooms that offer non-relevant curricula and teacher-centred methods. This book discusses these issues and challenges against the background of the existing educational system. Using a case study approach, the author has examined three different schools in Delhi where "special" needs children have been admitted, and has analysed the findings against the background of the Indian education policy and its provisions for special education.

In India the policy of exclusion revolves around the social institutions, which is based on their identities for instance caste, religion, gender, which isolate, separate and exclude them (Thorat & Kumar, 2010). The social-economic structure of the society maintains this tradition of discrimination and exclusion. Therefore, thus, education can also not be seen at vacuum (Barten, 1999).Education is also manifestation of great Indian values of equity and cohesion. Education has the potential to play a key role in combating inequalities, exclusion and to lay the groundwork for a more equitable and inclusive society. The challenges are to ensure that educational systems are not only efficient but also inclusive. Inclusive means in terms of equal opportunities to access quality education and individual identity with their diverse backgrounds. Education system without appropriate measures to deal with this challenge can reinforce social exclusion. The question arises in front of us, that what kind of educational measures process of exclusion ? Due to the various steps taken at the policy level, today education is accessible to all, but can we say that they are accepted with their variegated identities, to which they belong? Are they socially included in education system? Are there any efforts made to accept their groups with their identities? In the proposed research, Education Policies would be studied in this content.

In the last couple of years there has been a spurt of growing interest in and awareness about questions of social exclusion and inclusion. While the nature of exclusion in India has centered around the caste system, other disadvantaged groups such as tribal, women and poor have also suffered from similar disabilities. Their politics of exclusion and inclusion, censure and celebration show that they wish to be a part of the so-called mainstream academic discourse yet cannot be. The objective of this book is to discuss about social exclusion arising out of institutions of caste and gender and the inclusive policies designed for them. This book makes a comprehensive analysis on the thematic issues identified for this seminar within the frame work of human rights education. The recommendations made through this book are expected to influence the policy of inclusive growth within the broad frame work of human rights education. Abstract: This study delved into the realm of inclusive education within the Indian context, focusing on the perceptions and recommendations of educators. Drawing upon comprehensive review of existing literature, the research objectives were formulated to address gaps and provide insights into the multifaceted aspects of inclusive education. A structured questionnaire was administered to 392 participants, encompassing demographic characteristics, attitudes towards inclusive education, perceived challenges and benefits, and additional insights through open-ended questions. Analysis of the data revealed nuanced findings, including a balanced gender distribution among participants, a robust belief in the benefits of inclusive education, and widespread recognition of its academic and social development benefits. Challenges such as resource inadequacy and workload implications were also acknowledged, underscoring the need for targeted interventions and support mechanisms. Standardized recommendations derived from the findings aimed to guide future research and policy interventions towards fostering a more inclusive and equitable educational landscape in India.
