Collaborative Networks A Tool for Promoting Co-creation and Innovation The collaborative networks paradigm offers powerful socio-organizational mec- nisms, supported by advanced information and communication technologies for p- moting innovation. This, in turn, leads to new products and services, growth of better customer relationships, establishing better project and process management, and building higher-performing consortia. By putting diverse entities that bring different perspectives, competencies, practices, and cultures, to work together, collaborative networks develop the right environment for the emergence of new ideas and more efficient, yet practical, solutions. This aspect is particularly important for small and medium enterprises which typically lack critical mass and can greatly benefit from participation in co-innovation networks. However, larger organizations also benefit from the challenges and the diversity found in collaborative ecosystems. In terms of research, in addition to the trend identified in previous years toward a sounder consolidation of the theoretical foundation in this discipline, there is now a direction of developments more focused on modeling and reasoning about new c- laboration patterns and their contribution to value creation. “Soft issues,” including social capital, cultural aspects, ethics and value systems, trust, emotions, behavior, etc. continue to deserve particular attention in terms of modeling and reasoning. Exploi- tion of new application domains such as health care, education, and active aging for retired professionals also help identify new research challenges, both in terms of m- eling and ICT support development.

The notion of data is increasingly encountered in spatial, creative and cultural studies. Big data and artificial intelligence are significantly influencing a number of disciplines. Processes, methods and vocabularies from sciences, architecture, arts are borrowed, discussed and tweaked, and new cross-disciplinary fields emerge. More and more, artists and designers are drawing on hard data to interpret the world and to create meaningful, sensuous environments. Architects are using neurophysiological data to improve their understanding of people’s experiences in built spaces. Different disciplines collaborate with scientists to visualise data in different and creative ways, revealing new connections, interpretations and readings. This often demonstrates a genuine desire to comprehend human behaviour and experience and to – possibly – inform design processes accordingly. At the same time, this opens up questions as to why this desire and curiosity is emerging now, how it relates to recent technological advances and how it converses with the cultural, philosophical and methodological context of the disciplines with which it engages. Questions are also raised as to how the use of data and data-informed methods may serve, support, promote and/or challenge political agendas. Data, Architecture and the Experience of Place provides an overview of new approaches on this significant subject and is ideal for students and researchers in digital architecture, architectural theory, design, digital media, sensory studies and related fields.

This two volume set constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Distributed, Ambient and Pervasive Interactions, DAPI 2018, held as part of the 20th International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, HCII 2018, held in Las Vegas, NV, USA in July 2018. This conference proceeding LNCS 12203 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 12th International Conference on Cross-Cultural Design, CCD 2020, held as part of HCI International 2020 in Copenhagen, Denmark in July 2020. The conference was held virtually due to the corona pandemic. The total of 1439 papers and 238 posters included in the 40 HCII 2020 proceedings volumes was carefully reviewed and selected from 6326 submissions. The regular papers of DAPI 2020, Distributed, Ambient and Pervasive Interactions, presented in this volume were organized in topical sections named: Design Approaches, Methods and Tools, Smart Cities and Landscapes, Well-being, Learning and Culture in Intelligent Environments and much more.

The purpose of the book is to examine the role of communication through computational textiles used to create architecture made of lightweight textiles. Computational textiles are textiles that can sense and respond to the environment with embedded electronics and sensors. The term computational textile is not my term but one that has been in use for textiles others call e-textiles, electronic textiles, or smart textiles. These textile systems sense their environment via digital electronic programming through microcontrollers and sensors or are programmed using the quality of the material itself in connection with environmental cues such as humidity, temperature and light. Textiles operate as a mode of understanding the world and they bind us humans together as a species. Textiles are used in every culture on the planet, although we may use and make this material in different ways. In architecture, textiles made of animal skins or plant fibers were probably used to make the first shelters, as both protective clothing and enclosing space. As a liminal space between the body and environment these textiles became places of exchange and communication of information between people and their communities through shelter and clothing. With the United States currently putting money into research on smart textiles and intelligent materials, there is a quiet revolution happening in the very textiles that can make up soft structures. These sensing textiles have a primary role communicating to us as occupants and as observers. Sensing textiles permit connection to an internet of things, and the overlay of other spaces, times and events onto a physical space. If we look back to Gottfried Semper's correlation of clothing with architecture in his treatise titled Style: The Textile Art (Semper 1989:104) then today's wearable technology made with computational textiles provides a way to understand the emergence of a new style of architecture. This transforming sensory information communicates something to people. It shapes the environment as well as our relations to textiles (as we know them) in ways that call for examination.
