Excerpt from First Impressions in America It has been my habit to inscribe my books to some friend or friends; but in this instance I am bewildered by the number of American friends, to each. Of whom, with almost equal propriety, I might offer such small tribute of gratitude as the dedication of a book can imply. I should be very unwilling to be thought mindful of the kindness of only him, or her, or them, whose names appeared in such an inscription. So that I feel it better to dedicate this record of innumerable acts of kindness and hospitality to each and all of those by whom they were shown. Excerpt from Impressions of America The publication In this form of my Impressions of America has been undertaken at the request of many friends who have honoured me by reading the articles which have already appeared In print dealing With my visit to the United States. Time dld not permit me to overtake more than a small portion even of the fringe of America - my tour havmg ex tended only little over a month - and the range of my observations was therefore very limited, but If, notth standing this drawback, I have been able to Invest the followmg chapters With any public Interest my efforts Will not have been in vain. Considerable additions have been made to the original articles, and tle I have found It desirable to make some excisions an entirely fresh feature has been introduced In the description of my homeward journey from Chicago by lake and river through Canadian territory to Quebec and thence by ocean liner to England. Excerpt from America, Old and New: Impressions of Six Months in the States The scenery which Europe has chosen for its type of America is the prairie land of the Middle West. So far as any choice could be made this is not unfair, for there is more of this scenery in the States than of any other, but the impression created is after all a partial one. There are vast regions in America which for better or for worse are very different from the Middle West. There are, to begin with, the veritable deserts of the South Coast, the great Sahara of the continent. It stretches hundreds of miles inland from the Rockies, a wilderness of rocks and sands. Few level tracts occur; ridges and peaks of rock rise everywhere. Vegetation is seldom quite absent; it is vegetation of the classic desert type, thorny bushes, aloes and cactus trees, useless to man and beast. There is no American camel to crop their dry and bitter foliage; lizards and rattlesnakes are the native inheritors of the wilderness. Human eyes may look on the scene with various feelings. It is now the solemn waste of the Egyptian and Arabian sands. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
