Spanish English Contrasts

The objective of the monograph is to contrast the different levels of the two languages involved, English and Spanish, in order to highlight the main divergences found between the two linguistic systems; besides, it also tackles some cultural and pragmatic differences. English and Spanish in Contrast is aimed at adult learners of English or Spanish with some previous knowledge of both languages, but also to teachers and non-native speakers who want to increase their proficiency in any of the two languages. The book is divided into a theoretical section, where selected issues of the Spanish and English linguistic systems are explained and contrasted; and a practical section, which includes exercises to accompany the explanations and concentrates on practising upon those aspects that are a particular problem to non-native speakers and usually, the source of the most frequent mistakes. Finally a key to the exercises is provided. Therefore, it may be used as a self-study tool as well.

In contrastive linguistics of English and German, there is a tradition of accounting for contrasts with respect to grammar and, to a lesser extent, for lexis and phonetics. Moving on to discourse and text, there is a sizeable body of literature on cohesive patterns in English and German respectively - but very little in terms of a comparison. The latter, though, is of particular interest for language learners, translators and, of course, linguists and researchers in language technology. This book attempts to close this gap, based on a number of years of corpus-based study into variation and cohesion in the two languages. While there is an overall focus on language contrasts, it also investigates variation between different registers language-internally, and between written and spoken mode in particular. For each of the five major types of cohesion (co-reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunctive relations and lexical cohesion), overviews are given of contrasts in the system and of contrastive frequencies in texts. Results and methods presented in this book are thus relevant for language teaching, translation, language technology and corpus-based work on English and German generally.

Although it has long been recognized that second language pronunciation is strongly influenced by the native language, second language phonology has only become a recognized area of study during the last thirty years. Unlike most monographs on Spanish phonology and morphology that approach these topics from a structuralist or generativist framework, this volume is written from a less traditional point of view.
