This is a chronicle of encounters with a lot of bird books, in fact a lifetime of such encounters. The world of bird books is vast and varied, defying coherent description. The author’s qualification for making this attempt to describe it is that he owns several hundred of them, gathered over more than 70 years. To help make sense of this obsession, the describing of the books is linked to a life in which traditional birdwatching (and book hunting) went on, in different places, and in between other things.

This second edition of Australian Bird Names is a completely updated checklist of Australian birds and the meanings behind their common and scientific names, which may be useful, useless or downright misleading! For each species, the authors examine the many-and-varied common names and full scientific name, with derivation, translation and a guide to pronunciation. Stories behind the name are included, as well as relevant aspects of biology, conservation and history. Original descriptions, translated by the authors, have been sourced for many species. As well as being a book about names, this is a book about the history of the ever-developing understanding of birds, about the people who contributed to this understanding and, most of all, about the birds themselves. 'On the Wallaby, The Diary of a Queensland Swagman' is an adventure novel written in first-person perspective by Edward Sorenson. This is a plain bush yarn, relating in a humorous vein the experiences and adventures of a young man, who, finding himself stranded in Brisbane, where he knew no one, shouldered his swag and struck out into the bush to look for a job. His track from Breakfast Creek to beyond the Maranoa River, may be traced on the map, for he deals only with real places—and real people—and what he goes through is what the majority of swag men go through. Always an optimist, he sees the humor of the situations, and his narrative is embellished with details of bushcraft, and with the yarns and the fun of campfire and track.

"Karaway the Cockatoo and Other Nature Stories" is a collection of four animal stories by the Australian writer and poet Edward Sorenson. He was famous for stories featuring Australian wildlife.
