Standards For The Use And Disposal Of Sewage Sludge

Provides criteria for classification of solid waste disposal facilities and practices. It also provides guidelines for the disposal of sewage sludge on the land when the sewage sludge is not used or disposed through a practice regulated in 40 CFR Part 503. 3Sewage sludge2 means solid, semi-solid, or liquid residue generated during the treatment of domestic sewage in a treatment works. It includes, but is not limited to, domestic septage; scum or solids removed in primary, secondary, or advanced wastewater treatment processes; and a material derived from sewage sludge.

The EPA has promulgated risk-based regulations that governs the final use or disposal of sewage sludge (SS). The intent of this Federal program is to ensure that SS is used or disposed of in a way that protects both human health & the environment. Part 503, Standards, establishes the general requirements, pollutant limits, operational standards, & management practices, as well as frequency of monitoring, recordkeeping, & reporting requirements, that apply to SS that is land applied, placed on a surface disposal site, or fired in a sewage sludge incinerator. This report explains the requirements applicable to land appliers of SS (referred to as biosolidsÓ).
