You'd think they'd hand out maps or life strategy plans, wouldn't you? No one I ever knew had a map or even a guidebook for life. No three-point outlines. No "Sit down here and let me tell you how this works" kind of advice either. So how was I to know? I just jumped right in, like I did with everything else in my life. Didn't question how or why...just did it! That had always been my way of doin' things from the start. "Just do it." Even before the Nike commercials. Did ya ever wonder why our federal or state court systems don't make you take a marriage test or a kid-raisin' test? Seems to me like that's way more important to the welfare and safety of our society than drivin' a Lexus or a Dodge Ram TufTruck. You have to go the courthouse in any state in America to get a marriage license, but anyone can have a baby and keep it to raise without any kind of previous experience or license. Like I said, no how-to manual. So how does anybody know how to keep a marriage going for a lifetime or raise one, two, three, or more little helpless babies into grown adults fit to govern, heal, lead, and protect our society? Well, I didn't have a manual. No license. No mentor. I just jumped right in with my heart and soul and did the best I could bein' young as I was and all. I was hardly grown myself. Certainly in no way wise to the world or rich enough to get education past high school. At seventeen, I graduated from a little country school with thirty-one kids like me who thought they knew more than they actually did. A few years later, we learned that we really didn't know much at all. Fresh and new at life and ready to jump right in and start livin' it on my own, I was ready!

The Kentucky Encyclopedia's 2,000-plus entries are the work of more than five hundred writers. Their subjects reflect all areas of the commonwealth and span the time from prehistoric settlement to today's headlines, recording Kentuckians' achievements in art, architecture, business, education, politics, religion, science, and sports. Biographical sketches portray all of Kentucky's governors and U.S. senators, as well as note congressmen and state and local politicians. Kentucky's impact on the national scene is registered in the lives of such figures as Carry Nation, Henry Clay, Louis Brandeis, and Alben Barkley. The commonwealth's high range from writers Harriette Arnow and Jesse Stuart, reformers Laura Clay and Mary Breckinridge, and civil rights leaders Whitney Young, Jr., and Georgia Powers, to sports figures Muhammad Ali and Adolph Rupp and entertainers Loretta Lynn, Merle Travis, and the Everly Brothers. Entries describe each county and county seat and each community with a population above 2,500. Broad overview articles examine such topics as agriculture, segregation, transportation, literature, and folklife. Frequently misunderstood aspects of Kentucky's history and culture are clarified and popular misconceptions corrected. The facts on such subjects as mint juleps, Fort Knox, Boone's coonskin cap, the Kentucky hot brown, and Morgan's Raiders will settle many an argument. For both the researcher and the more casual reader, this collection of facts and fancies about Kentucky and Kentuckians will be an invaluable resource.

This autobiography discusses the author's childhood, his entrance into politics, and his attempts, to prevent legislators from becoming lobbyists immediately upon leaving the Legislature and prevent government bureaucrats from being enriched by businesses they regulate, license, inspect, or oversee as a government official. The book discloses the shocking details of elected officials, voting for their own personal financial interests, and opposing efforts to strengthen campaign finance laws, financial disclosure rules and restrictions on lobbyist gift giving. Eight states flunked the 2012 Center for Public Integrity assessment of transparency, accountability and anti-corruption mechanisms. Not a single state received an A grade, and only five earned a B grade. Wyoming ranked 48th out of all 50 States. The risk for government corruption in the states is a nationwide epidemic, mirroring the cronyism and perversion at the federal level, yet politicians and their special interests and supporters vehemently deny its existence. The book reveals details of the successful strategy in a gubernatorial political campaign that produced a winner in spite of the fact that his party's registered voters were outnumbered by 2.5 to 1. What did they do? How did they do it? Can the strategy be applied in other campaigns? Conflicts of interest Influence peddling Cronyism Unethical behavior Acceptance of gifts and favors Graft and corruption

This New York Times bestseller offers “slam-dunk lessons in teamwork and character” from the NBA hall of famer and former US senator (People). Bill Bradley, whose varied career highlights include a gold-medal win in the Olympics, two world championship victories with the New York Knicks, and three terms as a US senator from New Jersey, writes here about the game that helped form his philosophies for success in basketball and in life. Each chapter is devoted to a value that is fundamental to Bradley’s vision of a purposeful life: passion, discipline, selflessness, respect, perspective, courage, leadership, responsibility, resilience, and imagination. In each, he illustrates these principles with personal anecdotes and observations, creating a concise philosophical treatise that readers can apply to their own lives. With an introduction by Bradley’s friend and teammate Phil Jackson, this “love letter to basketball . . . is every bit as prescient, thoughtful, and just plain valuable a work as you’d expect from a man who never approaches any task without a full commitment” (The Boston Globe). “Bradley hits nothing but net with Values of the Game. Call it The Book of Virtues meets hardwood.” —USA Today “This may be the single most important present a parent can give a sports-loving child.” —The Dallas Morning News
