Excerpt from State Morality and a League of Nations Here are the two conflicting theories that have been set forth in these pages, and their interest is not merely academic, for if the first theory be incorrect, then we shall waste much time and incur much disappointment in trying to obtain from state action what a state is not calculated to produce. According to the second theory, we shall trust in political action only up to a certain point we shall not confide in it for the full accomplishment of human ideals we shall allow for state egotism so long as states exist, and shall regard universal brotherhood as a human rather than a political ideal. Politicians will only achieve What man kind in general Will and desire. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Morality of Nations: An Essay on the Theory of Politics But what are the principles of right? They cannot be pious opinions that a nation should keep treaties or should be honest. Such principles are too vague. They are like the old Kantian command to do one's duty. The real problem begins in the attempt to discover what is one's duty. So now the chief problem is to find out what the moral relationship between States really is. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A Society of States: Sovereignty, Independence, and Equality in a League of Nations The idea of a League of Nations has now taken firm root. The spadework has been done. Leading statesmen of every country, in eloquent and glowing words, have proclaimed their adherence to the movement for its constitution after the war. It has extorted even the tribute paid to vice - hypocrisy. The seed has been sown. What manner of fruit it will bear will depend upon the knowledge and patience and care with which it is tended in its early growth. Excerpt from The League of Nations, the Principle and the Practice It is undeniable that the great mass of intelligent people of Europe and America have come to the belief, as a result of the catastrophe that befell the civilized world in 1914, that a different international organization from the one existing at that time was essential to the peaceful development of humanity. This opinion crystallized into a demand for a league of nations of some kind, and the problem of organizing such a league was given precedence over all the other problems that were pressing for attention at the Peace Conference. The Covenant of the League has been adopted by the Conference and will shortly go to the signatory states for ratification. Ought it to be ratified? The answer to this question can be given only after we have decided what we mean by the thing itself. Graham Wallas has said: "It is this last relation between words and things which makes the central difficulty of thought about politics. The words are so rigid, so easily personified, so associated with affection and prejudice; the things symbolized by the words are so unstable." The cry has gone up for a league of nations. But what do we mean by a league of nations? Is it something new, or have there been similar proposals in the past? Before 1914, or during the war, had the nations developed institutions which pointed the way to a league? What is the philosophy underlying a league of nations? How shall the League be organized? More important still, what are the actual duties which the League should be called upon to perform? For only in so far as it functions continuously, will the League of Nations be a vital thing. Finally, what shall be America's relation to the League of Nations? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
