Stepping Up To Global Challenges Sgc 2 Learning English While Fighting The Outbreak Of Covid 19

In 2020, the project ‘Stepping Up to Global Challenges (SGC): Empowering Students across the World’ was launched, during the difficult period when the COVID-19 pandemic was spreading across the globe and causing the lockdown of several activities. Education was also severely affected, but, even if the response widely varied at the time, remote learning, telecollaboration and project-based approaches were adopted by many teachers, “encourag[ing] learners to take an active role in their own learning process and to learn how to collaborate successfully with others in order to solve real world challenges” (Mont & Masats, 2018, p. 93). At the Polytechnic of Viseu (Portugal), Ege University (Turkey) and UTH University (Poland), four teachers of English decided to embrace the idea of diluting frontiers and exploring the potential of Information and Communication Technologies through telecollaboration, in which the students developed tasks around the topic of entrepreneurship. This volume investigates the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic regarding teaching languages online. In this regard, it focuses on the effects of online/remote teaching on teachers and teacher educators, considering the challenges that they have faced, how they tried to deal with these challenges, and the opportunities that arose while teaching during the pandemic. The chapters include narratives by teachers working in different countries around the world, and present their first-hand suggestions for good practices and solutions. They also highlight various tools, techniques, and solutions specific to individual countries, but transferrable to other similar contexts around the world. The book will be a valuable resource for pre- and in-service teachers, and teacher trainers involved in teaching English as a Foreign and Second Language, and will be of interest to practitioners who wish to understand multinational perspectives on online teaching, and its challenges and opportunities.

The COVID-19 pandemic has catalyzed a new era in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning and teaching by shifting EFL education from the face-to-face learning paradigm to the online and distance learning paradigm. Teachers and students have faced several challenges such as choosing appropriate web tools for presenting content either synchronously or asynchronously, motivating students to participate, and assessing students’ learning. Additionally, this shift to emergency remote online learning represents a challenge for students, particularly with managing their own learning. Taking into account that many students attend low-income schools with limited resources that lack reliable access to the internet and computers, this shift has resulted in growing equity gaps. Likewise, transitioning to emergency remote teaching has revealed a lack of digital competency and readiness amongst teachers. English as a Foreign Language in a New-Found Post-Pandemic World presents an overview of various tools, designs, and strategies utilized to provide digital teaching and assessment of the English language, shares research on using digital technologies for supporting English language learning, and identifies promising areas and directions for future innovations, applications, and research in digital English language learning and teaching. Covering critical topics such as digital teacher education, language learning environments, and online instructional tools, this reference work is crucial for administrators, policymakers, teacher educators, special educators, educational technologists, researchers, scholars, academicians, practitioners, instructors, and students.

This collection of case studies is special for several reasons. Firstly, because of the geographical and institutional diversity of the authors, bringing together experiences of teaching under COVID-19 restrictions in the university language classroom from 18 countries and five continents. Secondly, the publication is interesting because of the variety of case studies that testify to different strategies and emphases in dealing with pandemic-related challenges. Finally, the case studies collected strikingly demonstrate the creative responses of language teachers in a variety of contexts to meet the challenges of the pandemic crisis (Dr Sabina Schaffner).

COVID-19 is a highly contagious viral illness caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome SARSCoV-2. It has had a devastating effect on the world’s demographics with high morbidity and mortality worldwide. After the influenza pandemic of 1918, it has emerged as the most consequential global health crisis. After the first cases of this predominantly respiratory viral illness were first reported in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, in late December 2019, SARS-CoV- 2 rapidly disseminated across the world in a short span of time, compelling the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare it a global pandemic on March 11, 2020. The outbreak of COVID-19 has proven to be a worldwide unprecedented disaster. It has physically, psychologically, socially, and economically afflicted billions of people across the globe. Its transmission is significantly high. Serious postrecovery has been noticed in a large number of people. The virus is highly mutable and new and new strains are appearing, and many of them such as delta, BA1 and BA2 subvariants as well as their hybrids have been considered by the WHO as concerning. The virus has exhibited deleterious impacts on bodily systems other than the respiratory system (primary target) such as the brain, hematological system, liver, kidneys, endocrine system, etc. Right after its declaration as a pandemic by the WHO in March 2020, governments in various countries declared lockdowns to combat the spread of disease, causing major disruption to the lives of billions of people. Besides the impact on health and healthcare systems, education was changed with the introduction of online and or hybrid systems to help students continue to learn. Though the pandemic has subsided now, the emergence of new variants continues and lifestyle changes such as online learning and work from home have continued. Researchers who successfully mitigated the negative impact of social media and effectively used it for acceptance of medicinal or non-medicinal measures during pandemics by developing a realtime information sharing system and assembling a multidisciplinary team of experts to collect and analyze data from a variety of social media platforms across the global diaspora to better understand people’s perceptions and attitudes, as well as to spot early warning signs of error and correct them before they proliferate. They also emphasized the necessity of addressing people’s perceptions in order to increase awareness and education, so that social media may be used to promote public trust collaboration, and improved adherence to epidemic control measures. In totality the pandemic affected the environment and ecosystem as a whole positively due to a decrease in vehicles on roads and less movement of persons from one place to another. However, medical waste was increased and new measures were needed to handle it. People have had to change their habits in everyday life in order to live with the pandemic and protect themselves and others. This volume focuses on the implications of COVID-19 on education, environment, and lifestyle. It includes chapters on the transformation of education systems and introduction of hybrid modes of education, impact on environment, management of solid wastes, and development of innovative gadgets and architectural designs to help deal with the pandemic. Other chapters cover diet, family systems, and adoption of new norms in pandemic times. This book will be a valued resource for students, teachers, and researchers of social science and science as well as public health workers.

New Student Literacies amid COVID-19 explores how institutions needed to defend teaching, learning, research and innovation, and implement transdisciplinary approaches to address such complexities together with wider knowledge sharing to unlock solutions.
