This is the ninth volume of ten in the The Natural History of the Crustacea Series. The chapters in this volume synthesize the diverse topics in fisheries and aquaculture. In the first part of the book, chapters explore worldwide crustacean fisheries. This section comes to a conclusion with two chapters on harvested crustaceans that are usually not within the focus of the mainstream fisheries research, possibly because they are caught by local fishing communities in small-scale operations and sold locally as subsistence activity. In the second part of the book, the authors explore the variety of cultured crustacean species, like shrimps, prawns, lobsters, and crabs. Chapters in the third part of the volume focus on important challenges and opportunities, including diseases and parasitism, the use of crustacean as bioindicators, and their role in biotechnology.

This book explores a specific ecosystem in depth, in order to weave a story built on place and history. It incorporates the theme of a journey to help reveal the environment-human-health-food system-problem. While drawing on a historical approach stretching back to the American colonial era, it also incorporates more contemporary scientific findings. By crafting its story around a specific place, the book makes it easier for readers to relate to the content, and to subsequently use what they learn to better understand the role of food systems at the global scale.

Stock Assessment: Quantitative Methods and Applications for Small Scale Fisheries is a book about stock assessment as it is practiced. It focuses on applications for small scale or artisanal fisheries in developing countries, however it is not limited in applicability to tropical waters and should also be considered a resource for students of temperate fishery management problems. It incorporates a careful sample design, various mathematical models as a basis for predicting consequences for stock exploitation, and discusses the impact of exploitation on non-targeted species. This was a unique concept involving a collaborative effort between U.S. and host country scientists to address issues of regional and global concern through innovative research. Unlike other books on stock assessment that show mathematical models, this is the only book of its kind that discusses how an assessment is carried out. It looks at the field as a whole and includes sampling, age determination and acoustics. The book represents the culmination of a nine-year program financed by the United States Agency for International Development to provide new or improved methods of stock assessment for artisanal fisheries.

The blue crab (Callinectes sapidus Rathbun) of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts supports the largest crab fishery in the United States. Chesapeake Bay on the Atlantic coast and the estuarine waters of Louisiana on the Gulf coast now furnish 75 percent of the catch. Fluctuations in the abundance of blue crabs have occurred over the past half century in Chesapeake Bay where year-round fisheries have long been established. This report examines the nature and causes of fhese fluctuations. Several natural factors which appear to regulate the annual survival rate and the abundance of the blue crab are discussed on the basis of available knowledge.
