Excerpt from Stone Age Paintings No one saw him take the precious red onaman sand from his medicine bag, or what he moistened it with before he painted the mysterious figures on the lichen-free rock face with an ochre-reddened finger. Nor could anyone even then have known what was passing through his mind. Was he in the hypnotic trance that long fasting can induce; so that later he would not be able to recognize the paintings as his own? Was he experiencing a new flow of confidence in his super-natural powers? Yet any Cree or Ojibway, coming unexpectedly on the artist at work, and quietly withdrawing lest he break the spell that was being created, would have known with whom the dreamer had been in touch. And any one of us, had we been such a person, would have believed beyond all doubt that the shaman could leave his body in a dream, and assume powers and properties that no waking human has; and we would have had no difficulty in accepting the idea that one could even enter the living rock. Often we would have heard the old people talk about the mysterious Maymaygway siwuk who lived inside the rock cliffs beside the water. We might even have seen our shaman-doctor rub a white paste on a grandmother's rheumatic arm, and watch her smile with relief as she felt the pain go. Excerpt from The New Stone Age Whenever an industry experiences a comparatively short period of rapid development and its products are attractive for a very wide variety of uses there is almost sure to be a rich literature of considerable extent. In the case of cement and concrete much of the record concerns the application of the material and less of it than there should be is devoted to a discussion of the laws and principles underlying the whole industry. In any direction an abundance of material is to be found on our subject. The newspapers record this or that unique application. The technical and scientific press frequently devotes pages to timely discussions and any periodical concerned with nearly any phase of engineering is almost sure to refer to cement and concrete in every issue. The author has consulted and drawn from this store of information at every opportunity but obviously has not been able to review it all. He wishes to make acknowledgment for the assistance that has been received from Prof. Alfred H. White of the University of Michigan, H. Colin Campbell of the Portland Cement Association, Nathan C. Johnson and his old friend S. H. Salisbury, Jr. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The New Stone Age in Northern Europe The dawn of history came late in Northern Europe and the morning was stormy. We see the Roman Empire struggling in vain to hold back successive swarms of barbarians, pouring from a dim, misty, mysterious northland. Centuries of destruction and confusion follow; then gradually states and institutions emerge, and final our own civilization, which, though still crude and semibarbarous, has its glories as well as its obvious defects. The growth, development, and training of these remarkable destroyers and rebuilders was slowly going on through the ages of prehistoric time. Most of the germs, and many of the determinants, of our modem institutions and civilization can be recognized in the habits, customs, and life of the Neolithic period. Hence the importance of its study to the historian and sociologist. It has left us an abundance of records, if we can decipher and interpret them. It opens with savages living on shell-heaps along the Baltic. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
