-- Pluriel provides a composite snapshot, taken from a few particular angles, of the variety of poems written in Canada over the past few decades. In shaping this anthology the editors were attracted to the diverse cultural and social responses evident in the work of poets writing in English and French, both across Canada, and in particular in Quebec and other French-speaking regions of the country. Each poem is offered in its original language and in translation.

Jim Wong-Chu was the founder of the Asian Canadian Writers’ Workshop which spawned many literary stars, including Madeleine Thien, Denise Chong, and Wayson Choy. When he passed away in 2017, at the age of sixty-eight, he left not only a void in the Asian Canadian writing and publishing community but also a legacy of his own work that was never fully recognized. Jim’s poems speak eloquently to the Chinese experience in North America, both historical and present-day. This book includes Jim’s evocative Chinatown photographs, revealing the soul of a community threatened by gentrification and displacement. These five long stories, set in multi-ethnic Toronto, explore contemporary Chinese living in Canada. How can Chinese artists, brought up in the brush-painting traditions of China, find a living in Canada? How do they relate to the current lucrative art market of their native country? Two of the stories look in detail at strategies of survival by recently retired women. Chinese cuisine is integral to the lives described.
