Throughout the past few years, there has been extensive research done on structural design in terms of optimization methods or problem formulation. But, much of this attention has been on the linear elastic structural behavior, under static loading condition. Such a focus has left researchers scratching their heads as it has led to vulnerable structural configurations. What researchers have left out of the equation is the element of seismic loading. It is essential for researchers to take this into account in order to develop earthquake resistant real-world structures. Structural Seismic Design Optimization and Earthquake Engineering: Formulations and Applications focuses on the research around earthquake engineering, in particular, the field of implementation of optimization algorithms in earthquake engineering problems. Topics discussed within this book include, but are not limited to, simulation issues for the accurate prediction of the seismic response of structures, design optimization procedures, soft computing applications, and other important advancements in seismic analysis and design where optimization algorithms can be implemented. Readers will discover that this book provides relevant theoretical frameworks in order to enhance their learning on earthquake engineering as it deals with the latest research findings and their practical implementations, as well as new formulations and solutions.

This is an open access book.As society progresses and the city scale increases, architecture is diversifying and becoming complex, with structures transforming from simple structures into high-rise, long-span and even special and complex structures. Architecture is where people live and work, so its security must be ensured. However, the architectural structure is likely to be destroyed by natural disasters (earthquakes, wind, snow, rain), man-made faults and incidents (explosion, fire, crashes) and accidental events like attacks and man-made sabotage in recent years. Therefore, countries have endeavored to improve architectural security for many years. A large number of anti-seismic issues in the civil engineering construction have turned up, which also gave birth to many new anti-seismic theories, technologies and products. 2023 5th International Conference on Structural Seismic and Civil Engineering Research (ICSSCER 2023) will be held on August 25–27, 2023 in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China. With a display of the latest research outcomes in theoretical research, experimental study and engineering application, this conference creates a platform for scholars, researchers and technical personnel to exchange ideas and further understand each other. We extend a warm welcome to you and expect you to attend this academic feast to promote academic exchanges of relevant issues and advance the development of structural anti-seismic and civil engineering research and application. 2023 8th International Conference on Ecological Building and Green Building Material (EBGBM 2023,http://www.ebgbm.net/) will be conducted as a sub session of ICSSCER 2023. Scholars from home and abroad are welcomed to contribute papers and attend the conference.

An understanding of dynamic effects on structures is critical to minimize losses from earthquakes and other hazards. These three books provide an overview of essential topics in structural and geotechnical engineering with an additional focus on related topics in earthquake engineering to enable readers gain such an understanding. One of the ultimate objectives of these books is to provide readers with insights into seismic analysis and design. However, in order to accomplish that objective, background material on structural and geotechnical engineering is necessary. Hence the first two sections of the book provide this background material followed by selected topics in earthquake engineering. The material is organized into three major parts. The first section covers topics in structural engineering. Beginning with fundamental mechanics of materials, the book includes chapters on linear and nonlinear analysis as well as topics on modeling of structures from different perspectives. In addition to traditional design of structural systems, introductions to important concepts in structural reliability and structural stability are discussed. Also covered are subjects of recent interest, viz., blast and impact effects on structures as well as the use of fiber reinforced polymer composites in structural applications. Given the growing interest in urban renewal, an interesting chapter on restoration of historic cities is also included. The second part of the book covers topics in geotechnical engineering, covering both shallow and deep foundations and issues and procedures for geotechnical modeling. The final part of the book focuses on earthquake engineering with emphasis on both structures and foundations. Here again, the material covered includes both traditional seismic design and innovative seismic protection. And more importantly, concepts in modeling for seismic analysis are highlighted.
