Studies In Etymology

Studies in Etymology is a textbook for a course or self study in building vocabulary through an understanding of Latin and Greek roots and the grammar of word formation. The first half of the book is devoted to Latin roots and word formation through the influence of Latin grammar and language development. The second half of the book deals with Greek, the nuances of Greek grammar and syntax, as well as the influences of such things as Greek mythology on the creation of words in English. A special section is devoted to science and medicine.

Dictionaries usually give only brief treatment to etymologies and even etymological dictionaries often do not lavish on them the attention which many deserve. To help fill the gap, the author deals in depth with several etymologically problematic words in various Germanic, Jewish, Romance, and Slavic languages, all of which have hitherto either been misetymologized or not etymologized at all. Sometimes, he succeeds in cracking the nut. Sometimes, he is able only to clear away misunderstanding and set the stage for further treatment. Usually, he marshals not only linguistic but also historical and cultural information. Since this book also discusses methodology, it has the makings of an introduction to the science, art, and craft of etymology. David L. This volume presents nineteen studies by specialists in the field of Greek lexicography. A number of papers deal with historical aspects of Greek lexicography covering all phases of the language, i.e. ancient, medieval and modern, as well as the interrelations of Greek to neighboring languages. In addition, other papers address more formal issues, such as morphological, semantic and syntactic problems that are relevant to the study of Greek lexicography, as well as the study of individual words. Finally, in one study the problem of technical linguistic terminology is addressed along with the methodological, epistemological and other issues relating to the particular problem. The work is of special interest to scholars on the long standing problems of diachronic semantics, historical morphology and word formation, and to all those interested in etymology and the study of words of the Greek language.

Studies in Turkic Etymology" is a posthumous selection of articles in English and German written by the distinguished Hungarian scholar Arpad Berta (1951-2008), professor at the Department of Altaistics at the University of Szeged, Hungary. Most articles deal with Turkic loanwords in Hungarian and the Turkic origin of the old Hungarian tribal names. The volume, which is compiled by Bela Kempf, also contains a complete bibliography of Arpad Berta's books, articles and reviews published since 1977."Studies in Turkic Etymology" enthalt eine postume Auswahl von Aufsatzen in Englisch und Deutsch aus der Feder des bedeutenden ungarischen Gelehrten Arpad Berta (1951-2008), Professor am Institut fur Altaistik an der Universitat Szeged, Ungarn.
