Moses reviewed every aspect of the law in Deuteronomy! In this book, Moses presented the Lord's solutions to problems the children of Israel would face! After the Lord's discipline to those who transgressed the law, He knew the people would return to Him, ask forgiveness, and ask for help! When that happened, the Lord was ready, willing, and able to come to their rescue! In Deuteronomy, we learn the Lord's desired relationship with the children of Israel. This collection of thirteen articles in English by scholars from several countries concerns questions in the Pentateuch. Seven are on the book of Genesis: the use of 'ādām in Genesis i-v; the Toledot of Adam; Genesis x in the light of Babylonian geography; the site of Salem; the date and composition of Genesis xiv; Abraham's righteousness in Genesis xv 6; the Hagar tradition in Genesis xvi and xxi. Three are on Deuteronomy: "Yahweh is one"; return to Egypt in Deuteronomy xvii 16 and xxviii 68; the creed in Deuteronomy xxvi. There are also essays on the Elohistic depiction of Aaron; the wilderness itineraries and recent archaeological research; and the dietary laws of the Pentateuch. Substantial contributions are made to the study of different parts of the Pentateuch.

Like the book of Romans in the New Testament, the book of Deuteronomy provides the most systematic and sustained presentation of theology in the Old Testament. And like the Gospel of John, it represents mature theological reflection on God's great acts of salvation, in this case associated with the exodus of Israel from Egypt. Unfortunately, for many Christians, Deuteronomy is a dead book, either because its contents are unknown or because its message is misunderstood. The book is a literary and theological study of the themes of time and place, which aims to set the so-called 'centralization-law' of Deut 12-26 in the broad context of the book. The authors show that time and place are pervasive themes of Deuteronomy, a crucial part of its articulation of its understanding of history, religion and ethics. The heart of the thesis is that the foundational encounter between God and Israel at Horeb is paradigmatic for all subsequent encounters. For this reason, no one time or place can have final or absolute significance. The thesis thus calls into question the received view that the altar-law of Deut 12-26 is a 'centralization-law' associated with Josiah's reform. The refusal to identify the 'place' is no mere device against anachronism, but a consistent element in Deuteronomy's theology of history. The Connection between Deuteronomy and Josiah's reform has long been an important tenet of Old Testament criticism. The debate about the interpretation of Deuteronomy, however, has never been finally settled. The present study looks in a new way at the so-called 'centralization-law' of Deuteronomy which has been the most important factor in the traditional critical view of the book. It sets the law in the context of a broadly based study of the theology of the book, and comes to conclusions which call the connection with Josiah's reform into question.
