Excerpt from Studies in the Psychology of Sex, Vol. 2: Sexual Inversion The nomenclature of the highly important form of sexual per version with which we are here concerned is extremely. Varied, and most investigators have been much puzzled in coming to a conclusion as to the best, most exact, and at the same time most colorless names to apply to it. Studies in the Psychology of Sex, Volume 1 Havelock Ellis - be necessary prolegomena to that analysis of the sexual instinct which must form the chief part of an investigation into the psychology of sex. The first sketches the main outlines of a complex emotional state which is of fundamental importance in sexual psychology; the second, by bringing together evidence from widely different regions, suggests a tentative explanation of facts that are still imperfectly known; the third attempts to show that even in fields where we assume our knowledge to be adequate a broader view of the phenomena teaches us to suspend judgment and to adopt a more cautious attitude.

Rare edition with unique illustrations. Henry Havelock Ellis, known as Havelock Ellis (2 February 1859 - 8 July 1939), was an English physician, writer, progressive intellectual and social reformer who studied human sexuality. He was co-author of the first medical textbook in English on homosexuality in 1897, and also published works on a variety of sexual practices and inclinations, as well as transgender psychology. He is credited with introducing the notions of narcissism and autoeroticism, later adopted by psychoanalysis. Like many intellectuals of his era, he supported eugenics and he served as president of the Eugenics Society. A concise introduction to sexual psychology primarily intended for medical readers and students but also aimed at a wider audience with its expert guidance and advice on numerous sexual topics. Ellis' Studies in the Psychology of Sex is a comprehensive and groundbreaking encyclopaedia of human sexual biology, behaviour, and attitudes. In separate volumes he examined such topics as homosexuality, masturbation, and the physiology of sexual behaviour. Ellis viewed sexual activity as the healthy and natural expression of love, and he sought to dissipate the fear and ignorance that characterized many people's attitudes toward human sexuality. His work helped to foster the open discussion of sexual problems, and he became known as a champion of women's rights and of sex education. Contents Volume 6 include: SEX IN RELATION TO SOCIETY

Excerpt from Sex and Society: Studies in the Social, Psychology of Sex These studies have been published in various journals at difierent times. They are reprinted together because there is some demand for them, and they are not easily accessible. In prepar ing them for publication in the present form, some of them have been expanded and all of them have been revised. While each study is complete in itself, the general thesis running through all of them is the same - that the difierences in bodily habit between men and women, particularly the greater strength, restlessness, and motor apti tude of man, and the more stationary condition of woman, have had an important influence on social forms and activities, and on the character and mind of the two sexes.
