Excerpt from A Stumbling Block Ah, it is coming on to rain! He observed, and taking the gold-headed stick in both hands attempt ed to raise it under the misapprehension that it was an umbrella. He frowned when the stick resisted his efforts, but after a moment forgot what he had meant to do and set the thing aside, where it stood leaning up against the hotel-porch until later on the shock-headed youth came out and severed it. Excerpt from Stumbling-Blocks Well as a very wicked World, sees this, and falls to making reprisals. It gathers together the sins of Christians, and builds thereof a bulwark for it self against Christianity, behind which it pours its small shot into the Church. In all this the World is entirely wrong, though the Church is very far from right. The World, in the first place, makes the mistake of thinking that, when a man joins the church, he steps out of the sphere of ordi nary humanity, is to be measured by different standards, and is amenable to new laws, - stand ards and laws which have no relation to other men. His faults and foibles immediately assume a new importance. His movements are watched with careful scrutiny, and criticised With rigid severity. Failings become vices; faults, crimes and an im perfect man, a hypocrite. Constitutional tenden cies to particular sins, formerly unmarked or but slightly noticed, are first exaggerated, and then turned into an occasion for innuendoes and sneers, if not against the Christian religion, at least against its profession and its professors. Excerpt from The Stumbling Block: A Novel Margaret Benson's early childhood was spent in a small town in the western part of New York State. Her expressive dark eyes and rare beauty were her sole heritage from her mother, who was the daughter of a distinguished Kentucky family. From her father, of whom less could be said, she inherited the traits that were ultimately to dominate her character and disposition. Shortly after the death of her mother, when Mar garet was fourteen years old, she was taken to New York City and placed in charge of a woman who con ducted a lodging house on the East Side, where she attended public school. She saw but little of her father, who came to see her at uncertain intervals, and she knew nothing of his business or financial resources, except that her spending money was very meagre, and the amount allowed for her board and clothes only covered the barest necessaries. Though only fourteen years of age her slender, prematurely developed stature and the matureness of her features gave her the appearance of seventeen. Excerpt from The Stumbling-Block Old Owen Owen christened her Cambria, and this was the way of it. Her parents were from the Cymric fastnesses Of Wales. They had come to London, knowing but little English, and reading his name over the shop front, and recognising it for that of a compatriot, they had taken heart and gone in unto him and asked him for a night's lodging. N ow, it was known throughout Hanger Lane that Old Owen Owen was a very hard man. The hardest man, however, has secret sweet chords among his heart-strings that the sound of his native tongue in a foreign land may touch to responsive vibration. For two score years Old Owen Owen had not heard that sound. It quickened his senses and warmed his blood like a draught Of generous wine. He put down the book he had been repairing and looked at his visitors shrewdly over his silver-rimmed spectacles. They stood before him with appealing faces, a strange, lost-looking couple. Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world?
