Structure and Crystallization of Glasses details glass structural analysis from an experimental perspective. The book is comprised of eight chapters that cover various structural concepts. The text first introduces the basic elements of glass structures, and then proceeds to discussing the development of classical structure theories. The next chapter presents research that deals with structure of prototype and original glasses. Next, the book details the position of the structural conceptions resulting from the studies. Chapter 5 talks about the crystallization behavior of glasses according to the classical studies of G. Tammann and their development. Chapter 6 deals with the effects of the composition of glass on the resulting form of a crystal phase in the course of growth. The seventh chapter discusses the microphases in glass and their relations to crystallization, and the last chapter details the directed crystallization in glass. The text will be of great use to individuals involved in the research, development, and application of glass technology, such as materials engineers and inorganic chemists.

In Nucleation in Condensed Matter, key theoretical models for nucleation are developed and experimental data are used to discuss their range of validity. A central aim of this book is to enable the reader, when faced with a phenomenon in which nucleation appears to play a role, to determine whether nucleation is indeed important and to develop a quantitative and predictive description of the nucleation behavior. The third section of the book examines nucleation processes in practical situations, ranging from solid state precipitation to nucleation in biological systems to nucleation in food and drink. Nucleation in Condensed Matter is a key reference for an advanced materials course in phase transformations. It is also an essential reference for researchers in the field. Unified treatment of key theories, experimental evaluations and case studies Complete derivation of key models Detailed discussion of experimental measurements Examples of nucleation in diverse systems

The Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center has conducted the Saga more Army Materials Research Conferences, in cooperation with the Metallurgi cal Research Laboratories of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Metallurgy of Syracuse University, since 1954. The purpose of the conferences has been to gather together scientists and engineers from academic institutions, industry, and government who are uniquely qualified to explore in depth a sub ject of importance to the Army, the Department of Defense and the scientific community. Grain size and its control is a major factor governing the behavior of materi als. Knowledge that one can obtain grain sizes in the 10 micron down to sub micron range has established the basis for a new technology. This volume, Ultrafine-Grain Ceramics, addresses itself to the broad areas of: realization of fine-grain ceramics; preparation of ultrafine particle size materials; characterization of ultrafine particles and ultrafine-grain ceramics; processing and behavior of ultra fine-grain ceramics. The technical advice provided by Dr. S. K. Dutta of the Army Materials and Mechanics Research Center during the editing of this book is acknowledged. The continued active interest and support of these conferences by Dr. E. Scala, Director, Lt. Col. Joseph B. Mason, Commanding Officer, and J. F. Sullivan, Deputy Technical Director, of the Army Materials and Mechanics Re search Center is appreciated.
