This book discusses the concepts, tools and applications of systems engineering. Chapter One presents the implementation of automated measuring system for measuring chromatic dispersion (CD). Chapter Two discusses the results regarding the optimisation of phase based EOM (electro optical modulator) as the most important component in CD measurement setup, then investigates the results of CD measurement characterisations based on different lengths of fiber, different wavelengths and different RF frequencies. Chapter Three provides a review on optical waveguide sensor using ion-exchange technology. Chapter Four examines silver nano particle ion-exchanged glass waveguide technology. Chapter Five highlights the major advantages of using graphical modelling languages in a Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) context and describes the main features of SysML, the modeling language that the authors believe to be the dialect for MBSE. Chapter Six provides a complex system analysis for engineering of systemic failures.

For the last century, the automotive industry has been dominated by internal combustion engines. Their flexibility of application, driving range, performance and sporty characteristics has resulted in several generations of this technology and has formed generations of engineers. But that is not the end of the story. Stricter legislation and increased environmental awareness have resulted in the development of new powertrain technologies in addition and parallel to the highly optimized internal combustion engine. Hybrid powertrains systems, pure battery electric systems and fuel cell systems, in conjunction with a diverse range of applications, have increased the spectrum of powertrain technologies. Furthermore, automated driving together with intelligent and highly connected systems are changing the way to get from A to B. Not only is the interaction of all these new technologies challenging, but also several different disciplines have to collaborate intensively in order for new powertrain systems to be successfully developed. These new technologies and the resulting challenges lead to an increase in system complexity. Approaches such as systems engineering are necessary to manage this complexity. To show how systems engineering manages the increasing complexity of modern powertrain systems, by providing processes, methods, organizational aspects and tools, this book has been structured into five parts. Starting with Challenges for Powertrain Development, which describes automotive-related challenges at different levels of the system hierarchy and from different point of views. The book then continues with the core part, Systems Engineering, in which all the basics of systems engineering, model-based systems engineering, and their related processes, methods, tools, and organizational matters are described. A special focus is placed on important standards and the human factor. The third part, Automotive Powertrain Systems Engineering Approach, puts the fundamentals of systems engineering into practice by adding the automotive context. This part focuses on system development and also considers the interactions to hardware and software development. Several approaches and methods are presented based on systems engineering philosophy. Part four, Powertrain Development Case Studies, adds the practical point of view by providing a range of case studies on powertrain system level and on powertrain element level and discusses the development of hybrid powertrain, internal combustion engines, e-drives, transmissions, batteries and fuel cell systems. Two case studies on a vehicle level are also presented. The final part, Outlook, considers the development of systems engineering itself with particular focus on information communication technologies. Even though this book covers systems engineering from an automotive perspective, many of the challenges, fundamental principles, conclusions and outlooks can be applied to other domains too. Therefore, this book is not only relevant for automotive engineers and students, but also for specialists in scientific and industrial positions in other domains and anyone who has to cope with the challenge of successfully developing complex systems with a large number of collaborating disciplines.

"Waste, inadequate system performance, cost overruns, and schedule problems often result from failure to apply advanced systems engineering early in project development. Systems engineering is a systematic method to manage the formulation, analysis, and interpretation of what a system will produce and whether the outcome is the one that is desired. This book provides detailed discussions on engineering design and management processes within system lifecycles. The text addresses various issues of systems engineering fundamentals, emphasizing an integrated approach. The author presents methods, frameworks, techniques, and tools for designing, implementing, and managing large-scale systems"--Provided by publisher.

Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2018 in the subject Engineering - Computer Engineering, grade: 4.3.4, Kenyatta University, course: Information Technology, language: English, abstract: One of the major problems linked to design and development of any multifaceted system has always been the failure of planning along with definite identification of requirements, which cause performance lack and design failure. As a result, a well-organized approach to integrated design together with the advancement of novel systems is highly required, a system referred to as systems engineering (SE). Arguably, in systems engineering, all development facets are mainly mulled over at the primary phases, not to mention that the efforts obtained are used for incessant improvement. SE may be adequately defined as the effective application of scientific and engineering efforts with the aim of transforming a functioning necessity into a clear system organization via process of need analysis, synthesis, operational analysis and allotment, design optimization, evaluation and validation. Again, this system aims at integrating related technical constraints alongside ensuring the compatibility of all physical and functional, along with programming interfaces in a way that optimizes the total definition as well as design. Subtly, SE aims at integrating reliability, safety, reliability, maintainability, serviceability, schedule, disposability to meet cost, on top of technical performance objectives.

A formal method is not the main engine of a development process, its contribution is to improve system dependability by motivating formalisation where useful. This book summarizes the results of the DEPLOY research project on engineering methods for dependable systems through the industrial deployment of formal methods in software development. The applications considered were in automotive, aerospace, railway, and enterprise information systems, and microprocessor design. The project introduced a formal method, Event-B, into several industrial organisations and built on the lessons learned to provide an ecosystem of better tools, documentation and support to help others to select and introduce rigorous systems engineering methods. The contributing authors report on these projects and the lessons learned. For the academic and research partners and the tool vendors, the project identified improvements required in the methods and supporting tools, while the industrial partners learned about the value of formal methods in general. A particular feature of the book is the frank assessment of the managerial and organisational challenges, the weaknesses in some current methods and supporting tools, and the ways in which they can be successfully overcome. The book will be of value to academic researchers, systems and software engineers developing critical systems, industrial managers, policymakers, and regulators.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 10th International Conference on System Analysis and Modeling, SAM 2018, held in Copenhagen Denmark, in October 2018. The 12 full papers and 2 short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 24 submissions. The papers describe innovations, trends, and experiences in modeling and analysis of complex systems using ITU-T's Specification and Description Language (SDL-2010) and Message Sequence Chart (MSC) notations, as well as related system design languages — including UML, ASN.1, TTCN, SysML and the User Requirements Notation (URN). This year’s edition of SAM will be under the theme “Languages, Methods, and Tools for Systems Engineering”, including languages and methods standardized by the ITU-T, and domain-specific languages. Also included are software engineering technologies, such as for requirements engineering, software verification and validation, and automated code generation.
