Tahoe Detective Owen McKenna responds to a boat hijacking on Lake Tahoe, gets involved in the case of Anna Quinn who is hiding from members of a fanatical militia group, and the search for a treasure that dates to the Gold Rush.

When Tahoe Detective Owen McKenna answers his phone early one morning, a young boy named Paco cries out, “Help me!” McKenna talks to Paco and discovers that the boy is trapped in the back of a speeding pickup somewhere in Tahoe. In the front of the truck are two men who have just murdered Paco's foster mother. The men want the boy, but they don't yet know that the boy witnessed the murder and that he hid in their truck. As McKenna races to find Paco, he learns that the two men are contract killers from Las Vegas. They've killed before, using electronic stun guns to immobilize their victims prior to asphyxiating them with plastic wrap. While McKenna doesn't have a clue why the killers are after the boy, he knows that if he does nothing, the killers will keep coming for Paco. So McKenna plans to set a trap for them using Paco as bait. McKenna's plan carries a huge risk. If it goes wrong, he will be handing the boy to the killers....

The next day, four robbers in hoodies and hockey masks take down an armored truck loaded with cash destined for a casino at Lake Tahoe. The company's boss calls Tahoe Detective Owen McKenna. As McKenna tracks the robbers, he finds two of them murdered in the grisliest of ways. McKenna uncovers evidence that implicates a young woman named Evan Rosen in all three murders. Evan worked for the father of the kidnap victim, and she had a powerful motivation for wanting the robbers dead. Evan is arrested and charged with murder. The problem is that McKenna doesn't believe Evan did it. The only way to save her from death row is to find the real killer. But this killer is smarter and meaner than any McKenna has ever caught. It looks like McKenna and Evan are both going to die before the killer is finished...

Close friends: Tony Cuesta and Fidel Castro attended the University of Havana together in the mid 1950s. The two were involved in sports, hung out at trendy bars and cafés, and, of course, chased girls together. But eventually, these two close friends would be torn apart by world events and political situations they had no control over. He and his band of daring young men made dozens of clandestine raids on the Cuban and Russian installations in Cuba (sometimes in broad daylight). Cuesta lost half of his left arm, his eyesight, his wife, and twelve years of his freedom attempting to take back his country. After years in a Cuban prison, he returned to Miami to reestablish his Commandos-L and to keep fighting. He was the only man to sink a Russian freighter in peacetime and live to tell the tale.
