The NTBS was designed to address the ecological concerns about pulp mill expansion, and to increase scientific knowledge about environmental conditions [ecology, ecosystem sustainability, water pollution and control, habitat, effect on fish and fishing, etc.] in the major river systems of the north. The study's objectives were to gather and interpret sound scientific information about the basins, develop appropriate recommendations for basin management, and communicate effectively with the public. The government response report confirms the governments' commitment to ecosystem sustainability and to pollution control in northern rivers. First Nations and Metis aboriginal [native] peoples contributed significantly to the NRBS.

Manitoba is more than one of Canada's three prairie provinces. Encompassing 649,950 square kilometres, its territory ranges from Canadian Shield to grassland, parkland, and subarctic tundra. Its physical geography has been shaped by ice-age glaciers, while its human geography reflects the influences of its various inhabitants, from the First Nations who began arriving over 9,000 years ago, to its most recent immigrants. This fascinating range of geographical elements has given Manitoba a distinct identity and makes it a unique area for study. Geography of Manitoba is the first comprehensive guide to all aspects of the human and physical geography of this unique province. Representing the work of 47 scholars, and illustrated with over 200 maps, diagrams, and photographs, it is divided into four main sections, covering the major areas of the province's geography: Physical Background; People and Settlements; Resources and Industry; and Recreation. As well as studying historical developments, the contributors to Geography of Manitoba analyse recent political and economic events in the province, including the effect of federal and provincial elections and international trade agreements. They also comment on future prospects for the province, considering areas as diverse as resource management and climatic trends.

"This report compiles native traditional knowledge from the Northern River Basins Study area, as obtained through historical research, personal interviews with First Nations individuals, and completion of an extensive survey. After outlining the processes used to gather traditional knowledge and a historical overview of the northern river basins, the report presents community research results organised to reflect the knowledge of each community in the study area. The results are divided according to subject: health, family and community relationships, traditional knowledge, and future expectations and recommendations. Themes covered include land, water, fish and wildlife, illness and fitness, traditional skills and their transmission from one generation to another, and changes that have occurred since arrival of Europeans. The report ends with a synthesis of knowledge relating to the present spiritual, emotional, physical, social, and intellectual environment."--Pub. desc.

A large area of coastal waters in the northern Gulf of Mexico experiences seasonal conditions of low levels of dissolved oxygen, a condition known as hypoxia. Excess discharge of nutrients into the Gulf of Mexico from the Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers causes nutrient overenrichment in the gulf's coastal waters and stimulates the growth of large algae blooms. When these algae die, the process of decomposition depletes dissolved oxygen from the water column and creates hypoxic conditions. In considering how to implement provisions of the Clean Water Act to strengthen nutrient reduction objectives across the Mississippi River basin, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requested advice from the National Research Council. This book represents the results of the committee's investigations and deliberations, and recommends that the EPA and U.S. Department of Agriculture should jointly establish a Nutrient Control Implementation Initiative to learn more about the effectiveness of actions meant to improve water quality throughout the Mississippi River basin and into the northern Gulf of Mexico. Other recommendations include how to move forward on the larger process of allocating nutrient loading caps-which entails delegating responsibilities for reducing nutrient pollutants such as nitrogen and phosphorus-across the basin.

Examines the mechanisms of natural riverine sediment production in the Northern River Basins Study area, together with the routine data for suspended sediment in the area's rivers, as background for the examination of sediment-associated contaminants. Topics examined include: the causative mechanisms and boundary conditions affecting the sediment regime, including area topography, geology, and hydrology; availability and adequacy of data on suspended sediments in the area; time trends of fluvial suspended sediment dynamics on a seasonal (open water and ice regime) and annual basis, over the long term, and in critical events; sediment sources, pathways, and fates, and sediment dynamics at basin-wide, reach, and site levels; sediment quality, including sediment-associated characteristics of pulp mill effluents and sediment-contaminant relationships; and implications for sediment-associated contaminants. Recommendations are made for monitoring and assessment of the sediment component of the area's ecosystem.
