Text Entry Systems

Text Entry Systems covers different aspects of text entry systems and offers prospective researchers and developers global guidelines for conducting research on text entry, in terms of design strategy, evaluation methodology, and requirements; a discussion of the history and current state of the art of entry systems; and specific guidelines for designing entry systems for a specific target, depending on devices, modalities, language, and different physical conditions of users. Text entry has never been so important as it is today. This is in large part due to the phenomenal, relatively recent success of mobile computing, text messaging on mobile phones, and the proliferation of small devices like the Blackberry and Palm Pilot. Compared with the recent past, when text entry was primarily through the standard "qwerty" keyboard, people today use a diverse array of devices with the number and variety of such devices ever increasing. The variety is not just in the devices, but also in the technologies used: entry modalities have become more varied and include speech recognition and synthesis, handwriting recognition, and even eye-tracking using image processing on web-cams. Statistical language modeling has advanced greatly in the past ten years and so therein is potential to facilitate and improve text entry — increasingly, the way people communicate. The four articles in this special issue of Human-Computer Interaction describe recent research in mobile text entry. The issue begins with a review article that provides general comments on methodologies for evaluating new text entry techniques. The next two articles present Dasher--a text entry technique with an interface driven from continuous two-dimensional gestures and a detailed extension to the prediction model of Soukoreff and MacKenzie. The final article takes a completely different approach to modeling the text entry task. As a collection, the articles represent a sample of promising research initiatives in text entry for mobile computing.

th Welcome to the proceedings of the 8 International Conference on Pervasive Computing (Pervasive 2010). After Toronto, Sydney and Nara, the conference has now returned to Europe. Pervasiveis one of the most important conferences in the area of pervasive and ubiquitous computing. Asinthepreviousyear,wehadtwocategoriesoftechnicalpapers:FullPapers and Notes. Pervasive attracted 157 valid submissions, from which the Technical Program Committee (TPC) accepted 24 full papers and one note, resulting in an overall acceptance rate of 16%. The submissions included 628 authors from 27 countries representing all the continents (except Antarctica). As we can see from these ?gures, Pervasive is a truly global highly competitive conference. A major conference such as Pervasive requires a rigorous and objective p- cess for selecting papers. This starts with the selection of a high-quality TPC. We were fortunate to be able to draw on the wisdom and experience of our 28 TPC members, from the most prestigious universities and research labs in - rope, North America, and Asia. This committee was aided by the input of no less than 238 external reviewers chosen on the basis of their domain knowledge and relevance to pervasive computing. The papers were selected using a double-blind review, with four peer reviews perpaper,adiscussionphaseamongthereviewers,andadiscussionofthepapers in the TPC meeting, which was held in Palo Alto during December 12-13, 2009. We thank Nokia Research Center for hosting the meeting.

Welcome to the Proceedings of ICCHP 2010! We were proud to welcome participants from more than 40 countries from all over the world to this year’s ICCHP. Since the late 1980s, it has been ICCHP’s mission to support and reflect development in the field of “Assistive Technologies,” eAccessibility and eInclusion. With a focus on scientific quality, ICCHP has become an important reference in our field. The 2010 conference and this collection of papers once again fulfilled this mission. The International Programme Committee, comprising 106 experts from all over the world, selected 147 full and 44 short papers out of 328 abstracts submitted to ICCHP. This acceptance ratio of about half of the submissions demonstrates our strict pursuit of scientific quality both of the programme and in particular of the proceedings in your hands. An impressive number of experts agreed to organize “Special Thematic Sessions” (STS) for ICCHP 2010. These STS help to bring the meeting into sharper focus in several key areas. In turn, this deeper level of focus helps to collate a state of the art and mainstream technical, social, cultural and political developments.

Mobility is perhaps the most important market and technological trend within information and communication technology. With the advent of new mobile infrastructures providing higher bandwidth and constant connection to the network from virtually everywhere, the way people use information resources is predicted to be radically transformed. Over the last years, a new breed of information systems, referred to as mCommerce systems or mobile information systems, has appeared to address this emerging situation. In 2000, the IFIP 8.1 WG decided to look into establishing a task group to look closer at this area, and the idea was adopted and extended by IFIP TC8 the following year. After the arrangement of several workshop, this task group has been the driving force behind the arrangement of MOBIS (IFIP TC 8 Working Conference on Mobile Information systems) held in Oslo, Norway, 15-17 September 2004. The objective of the working conference was to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners interested in planning, analysis, design, construction, modification, implementation, utilization, evaluation, and management of mobile information systems to meet, and exchange research ideas and results. Specifically, we tried to use the working conference to • Clarify differences and similarities between the development of mobile vs. more traditional information systems • Investigate organizational impact of mobile information systems • Investigate mobile commerce applications combined with the advantages of mobile communications technologies X Mobile Information Systems • Evaluate existing and newly developed approaches for analysis, design, implementation, and evolution of mobile information systems.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Text, Speech and Dialogue, TSD 2013, held in Pilsen, Czech Republic, in September 2013. The 65 papers presented together with 5 invited talks were carefully reviewed and selected from 148 submissions. The main topics of this year's conference was corpora, texts and transcription, speech analysis, recognition and synthesis, and their intertwining within NL dialogue systems. The topics also included speech recognition, corpora and language resources, speech and spoken language generation, tagging, classification and parsing of text and speech, semantic processing of text and speech, integrating applications of text and speech processing, as well as automatic dialogue systems, and multimodal techniques and modelling.
