A NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Demand-Side Management and Electricity End-Use Efficiency" was held in order to present and to discuss some of the most recent developments in demand-side electric power management and planning methodologies as well as research progress in relevant end-use technologies. Electricity is assuming an increasingly important role in buildings and industry, due to its flexibility, efficiency of conversion and cleanliness at the point of use. However the production and transmission of electricity requires huge investments and may have undesirable environmental impacts. The recent nuclear accident in Chernobyl and the damage caused by acid precipitation are creating increasing concerns about the impacts of power plants. Some environmental problems are local or regional, others such as global warming can affect the whole world. Although environmental impacts may be minimized with additional investments, electricity generation will become even more capital intensive. Energy, and electricity in particular, is not directly consumed by people. To achieve improved standards of living, what is important is. the level of production of goods and services. If it is possible to produce the same quantity of goods and services with less electricity and in a cost-effective way, substantial benefits can be gained. By reducing costs, electricity efficiency can raise the standards of living and increase the competitiveness of an economy. Electricity efficiency also leads to reduced requirements in power plant operation, thus leading to reduced consumption of primary energy supplies and a higher quality environment.

Under the term Customer Relationship Management (CRM) companies such as Siebel Systems offer solutions geared at optimising customer processes. These companies claim high customer satisfaction and reduced costs. Traditional software giants like SAP and Oracle have also begun to provide software solutions in the areas of marketing, sales and service. For many enterprises, the re-organisation of so-called front-office-processes is new ground. But what must a company consider when it initiates a CRM project? It is important to start with the customer needs before moving on to customer relationships as a whole. This book describes customer relationships using the concept of Customer Buying Cycle and thus creates a neutral orientation framework for CRM projects.

This book demonstrates in a simple and straightforward way the process of discovering the attributes that are important to your customers, measuring their satisfaction with an unbiased survey instrument, analyzing that data, and then doing a statistical analysis to determine the best approach to improving the low-rated attribute(s) and implementing change that has a higher probability of improving customer loyalty. Satisfaction is a feeling; loyalty is a behavior with satisfaction as its foundation, coupled with a willingness to repurchase and a willingness to recommend. It is that interest in reliving a positive customer experience that creates loyal behavior. This book gives insights into the process that companies can use to create that satisfaction in their customers and promote loyal behavior in customers’ buying patterns. Each chapter is constructed as a self-contained entity. The method described in this book will help you collect data from your customers, understand the information through analysis of the metrics and comments, find root causes of problems, motivate people to contribute to improving satisfaction, and then sustain the gains by audit. There is no appendix to reference for additional materials. The basic process needed to analyze and implement a robust quality system for improving customer satisfaction is described in full, including presenting the data of “customer satisfaction values” in a way that makes it easy to understand.

This Fifth Edition includes new sections on electric vehicle loads and the impact they have on voltage drop and transformers in distribution systems. A new and improved tape-shield cable model has been developed to produce more accurate impedance modeling of underground cables. In addition, the book uses state-of-the-art software, including the power distribution simulation software Milsoft WindMil® and programming language Mathworks MATLAB®. MATLAB scripts have been developed for all examples in the text, in addition to new MATLAB-based problems at the end of the chapters. This book illustrates methods that ensure the most accurate results in computational modeling for electric power distribution systems. It clearly explains the principles and mathematics behind system models and discusses the smart grid concept and its special benefits. Including numerous models of components and several practical examples, the chapters demonstrate how engineers can apply and customize computer programs to help them plan and operate systems. The book also covers approximation methods to help users interpret computer program results and includes references and assignments that help users apply MATLAB and WindMil programs to put their new learning into practice.
