Haroun-al-Raschid is the Commander of the Faithful, the Caliph of Bagdad – and nearly dying of boredom. Looking for amusement, Haroun and his vizir Giafar (a kinder figure than in Disney’s Aladdin films) disguise themselves as foreign merchants, and go out to explore the city. The people they find in its streets and squares baffle and intrigue the Caliph no less than they will the reader of this, the twenty-ninth of the 34 tales in the classic Arabian Nights collection, translated into English by Andrew Lang. A treasure-trove of timeless stories, the One Thousand and One Nights or Arabian Nights have been loved, imitated, and added to over many centuries. Similar to the fairy tales collected by the Brothers Grimm, the Arabian Nights are drawn from the folklore of India, Iran and the Middle East, and were collected in Arabic versions throughout the medieval period; others were added as recently as the eighteenth century. These stories of the exotic East have been popularised for new generations by film adaptations such as Disney’s Aladdin, starring Robin Williams and Gilbert Gottfried in 1992, and Will Smith in 2019, and Dreamworks’ Sinbad, starring Brad Pitt and Michelle Pfeiffer. They continue to inspire writers as varied as Salman Rushdie and Neil Gaiman, while numerous Bollywood and manga versions attest to their popularity around the world. These stories of magic, adventure and romance have shaped readers’ imaginations for generations, and are sure to be retold for years to come. This selection was translated by Andrew Lang from the French versions by Antoine Galland, who was the first to include the stories of Aladdin and Ali Baba. Born in Scotland in 1844, Lang was a scholar of ancient Greek, a journalist, historian, novelist and poet, and the author of 25 popular collections of fairy tales; his edition of the Arabian Nights’ Entertainment was published in 1898. He became a Fellow of the British Academy in 1906, and died in 1912.

ISSN: 2397-9607 Issue 451 In this 451st issue of the Baba Indaba’s Children's Stories series, Baba Indaba narrates the Eastern Fairy Tale of “The Adventures Of Haroun-Al-Raschid, Caliph Of Bagdad.” A long, long time ago and far, far away, in an ancient Mesopotamia, the Caliph Haroun-al-Raschid sat in his palace, wondering if there was anything left in the world that could possibly give him a few hours’ amusement, when Giafar the grand-vizir, his old and tried friend, suddenly appeared before him. Now Giafar had something of importance to say to the Caliph, and had no intention of being put off by mere silence, so with another low bow in front of the throne, he began to speak. "Commander of the Faithful," said he, "I have taken on myself to remind your Highness that you have undertaken secretly to observe for yourself the manner in which justice is done and order is kept throughout the city. This is the day you have set apart to devote to this object, and perhaps in fulfilling this duty you may find some distraction from the melancholy to which, as I see to my sorrow, you are a prey." "You are right," returned the Caliph, "I had forgotten all about it. Go and change your coat, and I will change mine……" But then what happened you may ask? What happened to the Caliph? Did what he discovered give him the fulfilment he so desired? Where did he go with his Vizir and what did they get up to? And what is “The Story Of Of The Blind Baba-Abdalla” all about? How did everything turn out in the end? Well, you’ll have to download and read this story to find out for yourself. ======= Baba Indaba is a fictitious Zulu storyteller who narrates children's stories from around the world. Excerpt from Haroun Alraschid Caliph of Bagdad The name of the Caliph Haroun Alraschid is inseparably associated with the most charming collection of stories ever invented for the solace and delight of mankind. Whether there ever was any "Aaron the Just" in the flesh - whether he is not as legendary as King Arthur - it seldom occurs to the ordinary reader to inquire. The stories belong to all time and to no time. The king no doubt still wanders incognito in the streets of Bagdad; one-eyed Calendars still tell their tales; fishermen continue to delude the stupid genie; Aladdin goes on rubbing his lamp. The great Caliph has nothing to do with reality; his Bagdad is a city which may be on the Euphrates or on any other river, provided it be a stately city by a stately river; he, his empire, his crown, his city, his palace, his people, his officers, his harem, belong all alike to Fableland, where everybody has been hitherto content to leave them.
