The Adventures Of Maya The Bee Teaching Children That All Actions And Decisions Have Consequences

These stories and adventures revolve around a little bee named Maya and her friends Willy the bee, Flip the grasshopper, Mrs. Cassandra (Maya's teacher), and many other insects and other creatures. The book follows Maya's development from an adventurous youngster to a responsible adult. Written by Waldemar Bonsels, translated by Adele Seltzer and illustrated by Homer Boss with 4 fill page colour plates and 33 in text Pen and Ink vignettes. The moral of this book teaches children about the consequences of their decisions, as well as the consequences their actions, and inaction. Maya is a bee born in a bee hive during a time of internal unrest: the hive is dividing itself into two new colonies. Maya is raised by her teacher, Mrs. Cassandra. Despite Mrs. Cassandra's warnings, Maya wants to explore the wide world and commits the unforgivable crime of leaving the hive and is exiled. During her adventures, Maya befriends other insects and braves dangers with them. In the climax of the book, Maya is taken prisoner by hornets, the bees' sworn enemies. Prisoner of the hornets, Maya learns of a hornet plan to attack her native hive. Maya is faced with the decision to either return to hive and suffer her due punishment, saving the hive, or leaving the plan unannounced, saving herself but destroying the hive. After long consideration of her options, she makes the decision to return. On her return she announces the coming attack and is unexpectedly pardoned. The forewarned bees triumph over the hornet attack force. The two short animal stories in this book are written by Mark Twain. They are “A Dogs Tale” and “The Stolen White Elephant”. A DOGS TALE is told from the perspective of a loyal pet, starting with first sentence of the story, “My father was a St. Bernard, my mother was a collie, but I’m a Presbyterian.” This is followed by a description of the life of the dog as a puppy and its separation from its mother. When a fire breaks out in the nursery, the dog risks his life to drag the child to safety. In the process, her are motives misunderstood and cruelly beaten. This mirrors the legend of Prince Llewellyn 1st of Wales and his loyal dog. Soon, however, the truth about the situation and she discovered endless praise. Later in history, his puppy dies after his owner conducted biological experiments. Only a servant seems to realize the irony and said, “Poor little dog, you saved his child!” Ultimately, the dog is inconsolable and pines at the tomb of the puppy with clear implications that it will do so until death In THE STOLEN WHITE ELEPHANT, a detective mystery, a Siamese (Thai) white elephant, en route from Siam to Britain as a gift to Queen Victoria, breaks free and disappears in New Jersey. The local police department goes into high gear to solve the mystery. The elephant’s actions and movements are related in a number of telegrams sent by the detectives tracking the animal. While the experienced Cassandra wiped Maya's large bright eyes and tried as best she could to arrange her delicate wings, the big hive hummed and buzzed like a threatening thunderstorm, and the baby-bee found it very warm and said so to her companion. Cassandra looked about troubled, without replying. It astonished her that the child so soon found something to criticize. But really the child was right: the heat and the pushing and crowding were almost unbearable. Maya saw an endless succession of bees go by in such swarming haste that sometimes one climbed up and over another, or several rolled past together clotted in a ball. Once the queen-bee approached. Cassandra and Maya were jostled aside. A drone, a friendly young fellow of immaculate appearance, came to their assistance. He nodded to Maya and stroked the shining hairs on his breast rather nervously with his foreleg. (The bees use their forelegs as arms and hands.) "The crash will come," he said to Cassandra. "The revolutionists will leave the city. A new queen has already been proclaimed."
