Excerpt from The Annals of Hygiene, Vol. 2: The Official Organ of the State Board of Health of Pennsylvania; January-December, 1887 I have been asked many times the question why the Romans have spent such an amount of time, labor and money in building these prodigious channels across mountains and valleys, tunnelling the former and bridging over the latter with tunnels and bridges many miles long; when it would have been so easy and so economical to lay down pipes, following at a moderate depth the undulations of the country. In other words, I have been asked whether the Romans have known or not the use of syphons. To be sure they knew it, in theory and in practice. Excerpt from The Annals of Hygiene, Vol. 11: A Journal of Health; January to December, 1896 Dr. William A. Hammond has asserted that there is no physiological necessity for death, claiming that if it were possible for an individual to determine just how much vital force he would require each day; and if he would consume just the amount of food necessary to produce this amount of force, that he could thereby maintain such an exact balance between breaking down and building up that everlasting life would be possible. In this idea, Dr. Hammond, while, to a certain extent, physiologically right, is, as we all know and believe, practically wrong. However, there can be no doubt but that what we should strive for is a balance between these two vital processes. Excerpt from The Annals of Hygiene, Vol. 12: A Journal of Health; January 1897 Charity has become the synonyme of civilization. Judged by this standard, most of our cities may be justly proud of their position as dispensers of charity, and, consequently, as exponents of a high civilization. Excerpt from The Journal of Industrial Hygiene, Vol. 2: May, 1920-April 1921 The three fields of public, social, and in dividual practice in psychiatry are thus well logically in mind in Massachusetts, as indeed they are becoming clear to most other Atlantic seaboard states and to all urbanized communities that have faithfully undertaken the work of mental hygiene on approved lines. Yet some of us, I fear, may still regard this intermediary field of social psychiatry more as a theory than a con dition. Luckily, the men who think prac tice more important than theory are fast dying out or undergoing belated conver sion through reflection on the successes of theory in the Great War. If, however, you actually do meet one of these incorrigible practical men who will see nothing in theory, it is as a rule enough to show him the results of social psychiatric practice among. The relatives of, the victims of neurosyphilis general paresis and the like - to convince him that mental hy giene has unlocked a brilliant and cifica cions novelty for public health in its work upon the se - called syphilis of the inno cent. I make this point about social psychiatric practice somewhat at length, not so much for my present hearers as for others who may read the printed remarks and wonder whether after all there exists a personnel to attack such widely ramifying problems as those of industrial psychiatry. There does exist the appropriate personnel for work in industrial psychiatry. There is, to be sure, not enough such personnel; but there do exist competent workers who can be multiplied as soon as industrialists begin to crave this personnel and as soon as psychiatrists see the peculiar values of the new work.
