Learn how to identify handmade rugs using techniques employed by experts without having years of experience! If you want a more in depth understanding of how experts identify rugs, then this eBook is what you’ve been searching for. But first a warning, this eBook is not for everyone. There are many fine books which address history, geography and designs; but they omit an important factor which experts rely on for identification – the specific weave pattern found on the back of the rug. If you wish to go beyond a cursory understanding of rugs, this is the eBook for you. The Art of Oriental Rugs – A Weaver’s Perspective presents an insider-look which examines what is a weave, what causes it, and how to recognize it. This work is the result of examining hundreds of pieces through three years of intensive research. This is the first extended toolkit of its kind to demonstrate different Persian (rugs woven in the country of Iran) weaves based on their region and explore why they look the way they do. The goal is to establish generally accepted weave patterns attributed to each rug-weaving region in Iran. It is more than just samples from Iran however, it also includes pieces from Caucasus, Turkey, China, Turkmen and others. • With 1800+ pages it provides ample opportunity for an in-depth examination of weaves and many samples to aid in identification. • Depending on your level of interest, you can go as deep as you wish in understanding why weaves look the way they do on the back of each rug. • Although this work can be viewed on smaller screens, to be able to properly examine pictures including characteristics unique to each piece, it is intended for larger screens (8 inch or larger). It includes 500+ pictures of rugs woven in Iran (Persian) which are available in the market today. It includes 750+ closeup pictures of weaves from the backs of rugs from 170+ weaving regions around the world, including Iran (Persian), Caucasus, Turkey, China, Turkmen and others. This will aid in identifying rug origins. It also includes maps of each region with the different weaving types to help better understand how the regions use similar/different weaving techniques.

This monumental reference work—long awaited by collectors and scholars—fills an important gap in the available literature on oriental rugs. Lavishly illustrated with over 1000 photographs and drawings, it offers clear and precise definitions for the rug and textile terms in use across a broad swath of the globe—from Morocco to Turkey, Persia, the Caucasus region, Central Asia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and China. Covering priceless museum-quality rug traditions as well as modern centers of production, Oriental Rugs: An Illustrated Lexicon of Motifs, Materials, and Origins draws on classical scholarship as well as current terminology in use among producers and traders in these areas today. It focuses primarily on the rich hand-knotting and hand-weaving traditions of the Near East and Central Asia, but also includes some examples of Scandinavian and Native American weavings. Oriental rugs are receiving ever-increasing attention and recognition in the field of art history. Tribal weavings especially have become a focus for new research, and Oriental Rugs provides a new understanding of many distinctive traditions that were previously understudied, such as the weavings of southwest Persia, Baluchistan and Kurdistan. This concise oriental rug reference book is a must-have for scholars and anyone serious about collecting rugs, selling rugs or the rug trade in general. Just when the art of weaving originated is an uncertainty, but there seems to be a consensus of opinion among archæologists in general that it was in existence earlier than the 24th century before Christ. The first people which we have been able with certainty to associate with this art were the ancient Egyptians. Monuments of ancient Egypt and of Mesopotamia bear witness that the products of the hand loom date a considerable time prior to 2400 B.C., and on the tombs of Beni-Hassan are depicted women weaving rugs on looms very much like those of the Orient at the present time. From ancient literature we learn that the palaces of the Pharaohs were ornamented with rugs; that the tomb of Cyrus, founder of the ancient Persian monarchy, was covered with a Babylonian carpet and that Cleopatra was carried into the presence of Cæsar wrapped in a rug of the finest texture. Ovid vividly described the weaver's loom. In Homer's Iliad we find these words: "Thus as he spoke he led them in and placed on couches spread with purple carpets o'er." The woman in the Proverbs of Solomon said, "I have woven my bed with cords, I have [Pg. 18] covered it with painted tapestry from Egypt." Job said: "My days are swifter than the weaver's shuttle and are spent without hope." Other places in the Bible where reference is made to the art of weaving are, Ex. 33, 35, Sam. 17, 7, and Isa. 38, 12. Besides Biblical writers, Plautus, Scipio, Horace, Pliny and Josephus all speak of rugs. The Egyptian carpets were not made of the same material and weave as are the so-called Oriental rugs of to-day. The pile surface was not made by tying small tufts of wool upon the warp thread. The Chinese seem to have been the first to have made rugs in this way. Persia acquired the art from Babylon many centuries before Christ, since which time she has held the foremost place as a rug weaving nation.
