Excerpt from The Bengali Book of English Verse Many of the poems of this book have been taken from magazines no longer in circulation and from volumes long out of print. In the examination of these sources I have been greatly helped by Mr. S. C. Sanial, Secretary of the Calcutta Historical Society. Mr. J. A. Chapman of the Imperial Library has given much assistance in procuring forgotten but interesting material. Of living authors who have allowed their verse to appear in this collection, my thanks are due to Mrs. Sarojini Naidu, to Mr. P. R. Das and to Professor Manmohan Ghose. With the exception of one extract, reproduced with the permission of Messrs. Elkin Mathews from "Love Songs and Elegies," the poems of Professor Ghose included in this book are published for the first time. For such as have appeared in the "Presidency College Magazine" I am indebted to the managers of that journal. In many cases the copyright of books now out of print rests with the family of the author. Here I have to make many grateful acknowledgments. Mr. J. C. This book reconstructs the history of print and publishing in colonial Bengal by tracing the unexpected journey of Bharat Chandra’s Bidyasundar, the first book published by a Bengali entrepreneur. The introduction of printing technology by the British in Bengal expanded the scope of publication and consumption of books significantly. This book looks at the developments and the parallel publishing initiatives of that time. It examines local enterprises in colonial Bengal engaged in producing and selling books and explores the ways in which they charted out a cultural space in the 19th century. The work sheds fresh light on book production and the culture of print, and narrates the processes behind the printing of books to understand the multi-layered literary practices they sustained. Excerpt from The History of the Bengali Language It is very difficult to meet Sir George Grierson, for he has not chosen to cite authorities, nor has he adduced reasons in support of his propositions beyond what he has added at the end of his paper by way of his own signature. Where he has adduced reasons, he has rather stated new proposi tions in the name of reasons which stand equally in need of support. AS to the original cradle-land of the pre historic Aryans, nothing has yet been settled; and the Oldest record of the Aryans, the Vedas, being far from replete with evidence as to their original home and migra tory movements, the question relating to the appearance of Aryans in India is still a matter for careful inquiry and research.
