Annie Edith (Hannah Judith) Landau (1873Ð1945), born in London to immigrant parents and educated as a teacher, moved to Jerusalem in 1899 to teach English at the Anglo-Jewish AssociationÕs Evelina de Rothschild School for Girls. A year later she became its principal, a post she held for forty-five years. As a member of JerusalemÕs educated elite, Landau had considerable influence on the cityÕs cultural and social life, often hosting parties that included British Mandatory officials, Jewish dignitaries, Arab leaders, and important visitors. Her school, which provided girls of different backgrounds with both a Jewish and a secular education, was immensely popular and often had to reject candidates, for lack of space. A biography of both an extraordinary woman and a thriving institution, this book offers a lens through which to view the struggles of the nascent Zionist movement, World War I, poverty and unemployment in the Yishuv, and the relations between the religious and secular sectors and between Arabs and Jews, as well as LandauÕs own dual loyalties to the British and to the evolving Jewish community.

Jetter hones in on the most crucial but often neglected element of talent searches—knowing candidates’ attitudes and dispositions about students, learning and instruction, leadership, and other crucial educational topics which affect schools today—and provides an innovative model for hiring the best candidates. This book presents a recruitment and hiring process that uses narratives to help school and district leaders delve deeper into understanding the emotions, ideas, reactions, and problem-solving insights of candidates. The ready-to-use resources found in this book, including real examples of the narrative process in action, dialogues, and as a training process, are easy to implement and will strengthen the hiring process to ensure that you recruit and retain the best staff members for any position within your school or district.

There's a little-known school in Halifax that kids are excited to attend every day, right through until they graduate. It's a place where they absorb "real-world" skills, including critical thinking, and complex literacy, math and second-language abilities, so that they stick. They gather for intense, whole-school discussions on local issues, create art using geometric calculations, and dig into the school garden while learning about the biology of the native plant garden — all in one typical week. Over forty years, the Halifax Independent School has developed an approach to education that reflects the ideas of leading educators but follows no set formula. It offers parents and educators a vision of what schools could be like right across the country. In this account of "the best school in the world," readers will find ideas big and small for how Canadian schools could do a better job of engaging, challenging and educating their students.
