The Big Elephant

The enormous elephant quits his job with the circus and makes friends in his new home, a small town.

When two baby elephants escaped from the circus in 1975, it took eighteen days to find them. The authorities searched all over, but they were always one step behind this sneaky pair of fugitives. This colorful picture book follows these giant hide-and-seekers throughout Oklahoma as they evade capture for as long as they can.

Follow the adventures of Quinn, the mouse, who sets out to find his own spot in the great forest. A large rainstorm creates a rushing torrent of water that sweeps him away leaving him lost and alone. Remembering advice from his dad, he tries to seek out the Great Elephant for help. Along the way he meets other forest animals who claim to know about the Great Elephant and, out of desperation; he follows some of their advice only to find he's been led down the wrong path. In his greatest moment of need, will the Great Elephant hear his cry for help? In the time-honored and classic style of fables that teach truth, the allegory of The Great Elephant arrives to be added to the treasury of storybooks for teaching children and enriching adults. And the truth beautifully and cleverly rising out of the story is the greatest of all truths - finding the way to God.

Animals big and small introduce pre-schoolers to basic math concepts. With the help of the colorful animals in this book, even the youngest child will be able to grasp the idea of ratio and relative size. The opening illustration shows an elephant, followed by a simple phrase "1 polar bear is smaller than an elephant." An illustration of an elephant , rather than the word, challenges young children to recall the name of the animal. Then, on the facing page, an illustration shows how many polar bears would make up one elephant. It's seven! Subsequent spreads build on this concept--turn the page and readers will discover how many lions make a polar bear, and so on. The animals become progressively smaller, until the last comparison between a lemur and flea. But the book doesn't end there. Children learn that there is one animal that is bigger than them all: a whale, and that it takes all the animals in the book to make just one. Preschoolers will enjoy this fresh approach that teaches them the names of animals as well as the concept of relative size.

In this open access publication it is shown, that sustainable low carbon development is a transformative process that constitutes the shifting from the initially chosen or taken pathway to another pathway as goals have been re-visited and revised to enable the system to adapt to changes. However, shifting entails transition costs that are accrued through the effects of lock-ins that have framed decisions and collective actions. The uncertainty about these costs can be overwhelming or even disruptive. This book aims to provide a comprehensive and integrated analytical framework that promotes the understanding of transformation towards sustainability. The analysis of this book is built upon negotiative perspectives to help define, design, and facilitate collective actions in order to execute the principles of sustainability. Dr Dr Ariel Macaspac Hernandez is currently a researcher at the German Development Institute belonging to the research cluster knowledge cooperation and environmental governance. He was/is also a lecturer on negotiations, conflict and resource management, sustainability politics, environmental governance, climate change policies, development aid and sustainable energy systems in various universities in Germany, Philippines, Jamaica, Estonia, Spain and Mexico.
