The Cause of Pyloric Stenosis of Infancy chronicles the debate surrounding the cause of pyloric stenosis from its earliest discovery 300 years ago to the present. The Primary Hyperacidity Theory offers a credible explanation for all the classical signs and symptoms of pyloric stenosis as well a its associated features. In addition, this book comprehensively explores the medical and surgical treatment options as well as the general features used for diagnosis. An understanding of the true cause of pyloric stenosis will thus allow for treatment that is more individualized and sensitive to patients’ needs. Catalogues the classical signs and symptoms of pyloric stenosis and relates to their proposed causes Investigates previously unexplained time-sensitive symptoms by relating them to a delay in maturation of the negative feedback between gastrin and acidity Solves the mysteries of first-born preponderance, male predominance, and familiar inheritance Includes stories from real life families dealing with pyloric stenosis to supplement science

The purpose of this book is an examination of the anatomy and motility of the pylorus in view of many divergent views. Anatomical findings of Cunningham, Forssell and Torgersen et al. are discussed and integrated with radiological forms of movement. It appears that the pyloric ring is not a "sphincter" but that it forms part of a more intricate sphincteric mechanism. Evidence for a sphincteric cylinder is presented. Its cyclical activity may open and close the aperture and result in propulsion and retropulsion. The role of gastroscopy, manometry, ultrasonography and radionuclides in pyloric motility and gastric emptying is discussed. Anatomical and functional alterations of the sphincteric mechanism in pathological conditions, e.g. gastritis, gastric ulceration and pyloric carcinoma are described. This may aid in the clarification of the pathogenesis.

Although pediatric surgery is a distinct and evolving specialty, it still remains an integral part of most general surgical and paediatric medical practice. Nevertheless, surgery in children does differ from adult practice in various fundamental ways, and there are key physiological and anatomical differences that constantly need underlining. Progress and improvement in outcome has also been rapid but it is sometimes difficult for practitioners to keep themselves up-to-date with the usual surgical or paediatric text books. This book will give a concise overview of all important topics and is designed to provide information in order to recognise the common surgical conditions; namely typical symptoms and signs, investigation and then treatment management. It will also provide an anatomical and physiological background to aid understanding, in addition to emphasising logical, and where possible, evidence-based practice by the use of flow charts, tables and algorithms. Authored by an international range of leading contributors, this is the first book of its kind to offer comprehensive coverage to this topic in a quick reference, pocket-book format.
