From the Introduction: The plan of the paper is as follows. It begins with a literature review which pays particular attention to recent, mainly American, empirical efforts to find patterns of human resource practices among firms. The second section describes the data and methodology used in the present study. In the third section, the results of the analysis are presented. They indicate three distinct groups among employers in the sample: one, the majority, placed little importance on HRM, but two others did, by adopting systems of compensation-based or participation-based HR practices. The fourth and fifth sections present the descriptive and econometric results of the analyses, in order to identify the factors contributing to the choice of practices. They show that employers implementing systems of HR practices tend to be faced with a lot of external pressures, to have an HR-focused business strategy, to be large, and to be in business services.
