The Chern Symposium 1979

This volume attests to the vitality of differential geometry as it probes deeper into its internal structure and explores ever widening connections with other subjects in mathematics and physics. To most of us Professor S. S. Chern is modern differential geometry, and we, his students, are grateful to him for leading us to this fertile landscape. The aims of the symposium were to review recent developments in geometry and to expose and explore new areas of research. It was our way of honoring Professor Chern upon the occasion of his official retirement as Professor of Mathematics at the University of California. This book is a record of the scientific events of the symposium and reflects Professor Chern's wide interest and influence. The conference also reflected Professor Chern's personality. It was a serious occasion, active yet relaxed, mixed with gentleness and good humor. In recognition of professor Shiing-Shen Chern’s long and distinguished service to mathematics and to the University of California, the geometers at Berkeley held an International Symposium in Global Analysis and Global Geometry in his honor in June 1979. The output of this Symposium was published in a series of three separate volumes, comprising approximately a third of Professor Chern’s total publications up to 1979. Later, this fourth volume was published, focusing on papers written during the Eighties.

Containing four parts such as Analytic Geometry, Algebraic Geometry, Variations of Hodge Structures, and Differential Systems that are organized according to the subject matter, this title provides the reader with a panoramic view of important and exciting mathematics during the second half of the 20th century.

This volume contains intense studies on Quantum Groups, Knot Theory, Statistical Mechanics, Conformal Field Theory, Differential Geometry and Differential Equation Methods and so on. It has contributions by renowned experts and covers most of the recent developments in these fields.

Over the last four decades, Phillip Griffiths has been a central figure in mathematics. During this time, he made crucial contributions in several fields, including complex analysis, algebraic geometry, and differential systems. His books and papers are distinguished by a remarkably lucid style that invites the reader to understand not only the subject at hand, but also the connections among seemingly unrelated areas of mathematics. Even today, many of Griffiths' papers are used as a standard source on a subject. Another important feature of Griffiths' writings is that they often bring together classical and modern mathematics. The four parts of Selected Works--Analytic Geometry, Algebraic Geometry, Variations of Hodge Structures, and Differential Systems--are organized according to the subject matter and are supplemented by Griffiths' brief, but extremely illuminating, personal reflections on the mathematical content and the times in which they were produced.
