Excerpt from The Boy's Life of Abraham Lincoln The story of this wonderful man begins and ends with a tragedy, for his grandfather, also named Abraham, was killed by a Shot from an Indian's rifle while peaceably at work with his three sons on the edge of their frontier clearing. Eighty-one years later the President himself met death by an assassin's bullet. The mur derer of one was a savage of the forest; the murderer of the other that far more cruel thing, a savage of civilization. When the Indian's shot laid the pioneer farmer low, his second son, josiah, ran to a neighboring fort for help, and Mordecai, the eldest, hurried to the cabin for his rifle. Thomas, a child of six years, was left alone be side the dead body of his father; and as Mor decai snatched the gun from its resting-place over the door of the cabin, he saw, to his hor ror, an Indian in his war - paint, just stooping to seize the child. Taking quick aim at a medal on the breast of the savage, he fired, and the Indian fell dead. The little boy, thus released, ran to the house, where Mordecai, firing through the loopholes, kept the Indians at bay until help arrived from the fort. Excerpt from The True Story of Abraham Lincoln, the American: Told for Boys and Girls Columbus the discoverer of our country and Washington the father of our country - these two famous ones has this series of "Children's Lives of Great Men" recalled for young Americans. Now comes the third and crowning figure in the series - that of Abraham Lincoln, the savior of his country and, above all others, - the American. His story is as marvellous as a fairy tale and yet as simple as the truth. Sprung from nothing he rose to the highest eminence, and died a martyr for liberty, union and the rights of man. Upon his life, through four terrible years, hung the destinies of this republic and the redemption of a race. Today, the world reveres him as one of the most eminent rulers of any time; the future will yet place him where he rightly belongs - one of the worlds greatest men, perhaps, the greatest. For the boys and girls of America, brought up in the atmosphere of liberty, of justice and of patriotism, Abraham Lincoln the man of the people, has an especial claim to reverence. He stands as a type - as, before all others, the American. In the preface to the "The True Story of George Washington," the writer quoted, for boys and girls, a sentiment from one of the noblest of American thinkers and authors, James Russell Lowell. This introduction to the "True Story of Abraham Lincoln," can not be more fittingly closed than with the splendid tribute of this same prophetic poet, in his noble "Commemorative Ode," which every boy and girl of America should some day read: "These all are gone; and standing like a tower, Our children shall behold his fame, The kindly, earnest, brave, far-seeing man, Sagacious, patient, dreading praise, not blame, New birth of our new soil, the first American." Excerpt from Abraham Lincoln: A Story and a Play The home to which the baby came was poor and bare. It was a tiny cabin in the state of Ken tucky, which was then a rough, unsettled coun try. Around the cabin were thick woods where wild animals roamed freely. The cry of cata mounts and the howling Of wolves could be heard in the stillness of the night. Turkeys and deer Often ran across the path of the settlers. There were few neighbors, for only brave peo ple were as yet willing to venture so far into the backwoods. Excerpt from The Story of Abraham Lincoln: Or the Journey From the Log Cabin to the White House The humble origin and lowly condition of the man is presented for the purpose of strengthening and developing correct ideas concerning the possibilities of the human race, no matter What the early environ ment or training may have been. I spent several weeks at the Lincoln homestead, personally inter viewing the relatives, friends, neighbors and associates of Mr. Lincoln and his father's family, while those further removed from the old home stead were otherwise communicated with, thus obtaining many incidents and anecdotes entirely overlooked by the ordinary historian. I have tried to make the home life of Uncle Abe, the children's friend, so intensely interesting that not a single family in the broad land will be without it.
