This volume examines the long and complex history of the Greco-Roman tradition in South America, arguing that the Classics have played a crucial, though often overlooked, role in the self-definition in the New World. Chronicling and theorizing this history through a detailed analysis of five key moments, chosen from the early and late colonial period, the emancipatory era, and the 20th and 21st centuries, it also examines an eclectic selection of both literary and cinematographic works and artefacts such as maps, letters, scientific treatises, songs, monuments, political speeches, and even the drafts of proposals for curricular changes across Latin America. The heterogeneous cases analysed in this book reveal cultural anxieties that recur through different periods, fundamentally related to the 'newness' of the continent and the formation of identities imagined as both Western and non-Western – a genealogy of apprehensions that South American intellectuals and political figures have typically experienced when thinking of their own role in world history. In tracing this genealogy, The Classics in South America innovatively reformulates our understanding of well-known episodes in the cultural history of the region, while providing a theoretical and historical resource for further studies of the importance of the Classical tradition across Latin America.

Embark on a voyage through all the countries of South America, with Nellie B. Allen as your guide, pointing out interesting sights along the route and sharing stories about them. In that way you will learn about such activities as the tapping of rubber trees in the Amazon rain forest, the picking of coffee berries in Sao Paolo, and the harvesting of cacao beans in Ecuador as well as getting to know something about the workers involved in their production. You will observe the crafting of Panama hats and the spinning of yarn and weaving of ponchos. You will wonder at all the mining activities: nitrate and guano on the coast and gold and other metals in the interior. And you will hear stories of the discovery of the continent by Europeans, how Magellan sailed through his strait and Pizarro conquered the Incas in Peru. More than anything you will come to appreciate that South America is a land of contrasts with moist rain forests and well-watered plains east of the Andes and desert areas to the west. But you must stay on your toes for the author will ask you why one side is wet, the other dry, which products are best cultivated in what environments, and where else in the world you have seen the same crops grown or minerals mined. Questions and activities at the end of each chapter help the reader strengthen his understanding of the material, while the conversational style makes the book a thoroughly enjoyable read. Excerpt from South America Moreover, the idea of the deluge, which is so widespread among Eurasian peoples, exists among the Americans. They, too, believe that a cataclysm destroyed all mankind except certain favored couples. There are resemblances between the American cosmogonies and those of ancient civilization in Europe. Excerpt from A Bibliography of South America I have divided my subject into two parts the first contains an alphabetically arranged list of authors with only such works as they have written on South America included beneath their names; the second and more im portant part contains a list of all these works re-arranged and classified under their various subject headings so far as my information on their contents is correct. They are also' classified according to their dates of publication so that the order in which books have followed one another in their various sections may be easily noted. This second part includes every book or magazine article in English upon any subject dealing with South America which has come within my view, and includes many items which for want of further information cannot appear in the first part. This work is the result of many searchings into all sorts of odd places and much labour in arranging and re-arranging the titles under their most suitable subject headings, it was first compiled for the purpose of, gaining some idea of the written available knowledge dealing with Argentina but the necessity for taking a broader view of my subject was soon discovered and I had to extend the originally intended Bibliography of Argentina to the more comprehensive title of South America, justifying the change by including an additional collection of titles of works on the other Republics of this Continent. "The first comprehensive treatment in English of the rich and varied afterlife of classical drama across Latin America, this volume explores the myriad ways in which ancient Greek and Roman texts have been adapted, invoked and re-worked in notable modern theatrical works across North and South America and the Caribbean, while also paying particular attention to the national and local context of each play. A comprehensive introduction provides a critical overview of the varying issues and complexities that arise when studying the afterlife of the European classics in the theatrical stages across this diverse and vast region. Fourteen chapters, divided into three general geographical sub-regions (Southern Cone, Brazil and the Caribbean and North America) present a strong connection to an ancient dramatic source text as well as comment upon important socio-political crises in the modern history of Latin America. The diversity and expertise of the voices in this volume translate into a multi-ranging approach to the topic that encompasses a variety of theoretical and interdisciplinary perspectives from classics, Latin American studies and theatre and performance studies"--...
