The rapid warming of the Earth's climate has been a concern for decades. In the past, there were sceptics who either doubted global climate change altogether or who at least doubted that humanity was the cause, but today almost all scientists agree that a global warming trend is evident and caused by human activity. Though many of us understand that this means temperatures will-on average-rise, the science and the resulting social, economic, and political implications of such a change are far-reaching and complex.

By the time it was over, eight of the crew and nine rescuers were dead and scores more had been put in harm’s way. The disappearance and search for the airship Italia was headline news, all over the world, for months after its last radio message on 25 May 1928. It had reported being to the north-east of its base at Kings Bay, on the Arctic island of Spitsbergen, returning from a long flight to Greenland and the North Pole. Ships, aircraft and men from many countries converged on Kings Bay to participate in the rescue effort. The Italian airship designer and pilot Umberto Nobile had flown to the North Pole and beyond in 1926. He resolved to return to the Arctic with a new airship in 1928. The expedition had geographical and scientific aims, but the political environment was also an important motivator. Benito Mussolini and his fascist party had come to power in 1922 and a successful expedition to the Arctic would be excellent propaganda.

Bessica Lefter is back in this hilarious, all-too-relatable middle school novel that "will have readers laughing aloud" (Booklist). Now that Bessica’s the half mascot at her middle school and made some new friends, she finally feels like she’s fitting in. But Alice, the other half mascot, hates her. And after some mean texts, Bessica’s friendship with Sylvie might be over. Bessica doesn’t want drama. She’s got her first big game to worry about. Not even taking care of gorgeous Noll Beck’s lizard or deciding whether to crash Sylvie’s party can distract her. Bessica will be facing off as mascot against T.J. the Tiger, who has a reputation for embarrassing the competition. Letting him make fun of her would be like letting him humiliate her whole school. Bessica’s worked hard to have some social status. And she’ll work even harder to keep it. . . . "[Bessica's] endearing qualities keep one rooting for her." --School Library Journal "A fun story." --Midwest Book Review "Informative and worthwhile." --VOYA

America has one of the most varied and dynamic weather systems in the world. Every year, the Gulf Coast is battered by hurricanes, the Great Plains are ravaged by tornados, the Midwest is pummeled by blizzards, and the temperature in the Southwest reaches a sweltering 120 degrees. Extreme weather can be a matter of life and death, but even when it is pleasant—72 degrees and sunny—weather is still central to the lives of all Americans. Indeed, it’s hard to imagine a topic of greater collective interest. Whether we want to know if we should close the storm shutters or just carry an umbrella to work, we turn to forecasts. But few of us really understand the science behind them. All that changes with The AMS Weather Book. The most comprehensive and up-to-date guide to our weather and our atmosphere, it is the ultimate resource for anyone who wants to understand how hurricanes form, why tornados twirl, or even why the sky is cerulean blue. Written by esteemed science journalist and former USA Today weather editor Jack Williams, The AMS Weather Book covers everything from daily weather patterns to air pollution and global warming and explores the stories of people coping with severe weather and those who devote their lives to understanding the atmosphere, oceans, and climate. Words alone, of course, are not adequate to explain many meteorological concepts, so The AMS Weather Book is filled with engaging full-color graphics that explain such concepts as why winds blow in a particular direction, how Doppler weather radar works, what happens inside hurricanes, how clouds create wind and snow, and what’s really affecting the earth’s climate. For Weather Channel junkies, amateur meteorologists, and storm chasers alike, The AMS Weather Book is an invaluable tool for anyone who wants to better understand how weather works and how it affects our lives.
