The subject of this handbook is Teichmuller theory in a wide sense, namely the theory of geometric structures on surfaces and their moduli spaces. This includes the study of vector bundles on these moduli spaces, the study of mapping class groups, the relation with $3$-manifolds, the relation with symmetric spaces and arithmetic groups, the representation theory of fundamental groups, and applications to physics. Thus the handbook is a place where several fields of mathematics interact: Riemann surfaces, hyperbolic geometry, partial differential equations, several complex variables, algebraic geometry, algebraic topology, combinatorial topology, low-dimensional topology, theoretical physics, and others. This confluence of ideas toward a unique subject is a manifestation of the unity and harmony of mathematics. This volume contains surveys on the fundamental theory as well as surveys on applications to and relations with the fields mentioned above. It is written by leading experts in these fields. Some of the surveys contain classical material, while others present the latest developments of the theory as well as open problems. This volume is divided into the following four sections: The metric and the analytic theory The group theory The algebraic topology of mapping class groups and moduli spaces Teichmuller theory and mathematical physics This handbook is addressed to graduate students and researchers in all the fields mentioned.

This book deals with topics on the theory of measure and integration. It starts with discussion on the Riemann integral and points out certain shortcomings, which motivate the theory of measure and the Lebesgue integral. Most of the material in this book can be covered in a one-semester introductory course. An awareness of basic real analysis and elementary topological notions, with special emphasis on the topology of the n-dimensional Euclidean space, is the pre-requisite for this book. Each chapter is provided with a variety of exercises for the students. The book is targeted to students of graduate- and advanced-graduate-level courses on the theory of measure and integration.

This is an introductory text on a broad class of statistical estimators that are minimizers of convex functions. It covers the basics of U-statistics and Mm-estimators and develops their asymptotic properties. It also provides an elementary introduction to resampling, particularly in the context of these estimators. The last chapter is on practical implementation of the methods presented in other chapters, using the free software R.

This book complements the authors’ monograph Cellular Automata and Groups [CAG] (Springer Monographs in Mathematics). It consists of more than 600 fully solved exercises in symbolic dynamics and geometric group theory with connections to geometry and topology, ring and module theory, automata theory and theoretical computer science. Each solution is detailed and entirely self-contained, in the sense that it only requires a standard undergraduate-level background in abstract algebra and general topology, together with results established in [CAG] and in previous exercises. It includes a wealth of gradually worked out examples and counterexamples presented here for the first time in textbook form. Additional comments provide some historical and bibliographical information, including an account of related recent developments and suggestions for further reading. The eight-chapter division from [CAG] is maintained. Each chapter begins with a summary of the main definitions and results contained in the corresponding chapter of [CAG].
