In the watershed year of 1919, world leaders met in Paris, promising to build a new international order rooted in democracy and social justice. Female activists demanded that statesmen live up to their word. Excluded from the negotiating table, women met separately, crafted their own agendas, and captured global headlines with a message that was both straightforward and revolutionary: enduring peace depended as much on recognition of the fundamental humanity and equality of all people—regardless of sex, race, class, or creed—as on respect for the sovereignty of independent states. Even as American Patriots fought for independence from British rule during the Revolutionary War, oppressive conditions remained in place for the thousands of enslaved and free African Americans living in this country. But African Americans took up their own fight for freedom by joining the British and American armies; preaching, speaking out, and writing about the evils of slavery; and establishing settlements in Nova Scotia and Africa. The thirteen stories featured in this collection spotlight charismatic individuals who answered the cry for freedom, focusing on the choices they made and how they changed America both then and now. These individuals include: Boston King, Agrippa Hull, James Armistead Lafayette, Phillis Wheatley, Elizabeth "Mumbet" Freeman, Prince Hall, Mary Perth, Ona Judge, Sally Hemings, Paul Cuffe, John Kizell, Richard Allen, and Jarena Lee. This edited volume includes contributions by scholars, ministers, artists, and NGO workers from around the world who are interested in topics of Mennonitism, peacebuilding, and theologies of nonviolence. The papers published together here reflect the richness and diversity of peacebuilding interests and approaches within the current global Mennonite family and offer interdisciplinary explorations of peace and conflict with attention to historical, theological, and lived perspectives. The book includes papers based upon research and insights that were shared at the Second Global Mennonite Peacebuilding Conference and Festival (2019) at Mennorode in the Netherlands. The findings presented here are structured thematically with attention to key points of current concern and research—including, among others, studies on historical and current peacebuilding efforts pertaining to migration and refugee care, ecological justice, gender justice, interreligious dialogue, church-state relations, and racial justice.

Topics were collected from books, television news reports, lectures, debates, comments by politicians worldwide, newspaper and magazine articles, and even the motion picture industry; and other personal contacts and communications. A chronicle of events in Iraq, since the war started, is also outlined, as Iraq continues to dominate daily news releases around the globe; and because many experts have stated that the United States government had made many miscalculations in the handling of Iraq; let alone, that the war itself was a huge mistake, labeled by most people worldwide as both illegal and immoral. Difficulties encountered in most countries are identified, as these caused much suffering amongst their people; and possible steps towards achieving solutions are presented. Those included are: hunger and poverty, healthcare, education, economy, human rights, justice, freedom, and a definition of true democracy, the environment, on corruption in politics and corporations, and most importantly, achieving and preserving world peace. Middle East conflicts are highlighted as well, but reference is also made to countries across planet earth -- large or small, rich or poor, developed or underdeveloped. These include the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, the Island of Malta, countries in Latin America, Africa, the former Soviet Union, China, India, Pakistan, and much more. A section is also devoted to events in the life of a most remarkable human being — the late Pope, John Paul II.

Over the past seven years, the author has written several articles for the media – often on request. This volume comprises the most important of these articles. The first 50 articles (Part 1) appear in English and the last 39 (Deel 2) in Afrikaans. The footnotes indicate who published the specific article and when. The latter is important because it puts each article in context. Sometimes the content in this volume differs slightly from that which has appeared in the media. Some of the articles have also been published by other than the indicated media platform / daily newspaper, but they are not mentioned here. There are some themes that overlap in English and Afrikaans but are not direct translations of each other. More than one article has been written on certain themes and some articles were co‑authored with colleagues as indicated in the footnotes.

Book on Christian Spirituality This is a book of poems on Christian spirituality as response to personal crises in life, woes and struggles of women, natural calamities, violence and terror. This book expresses poetic sensitivity to some events in our history that reflect conflicts in culture, religion and ideologies. This is spirituality from the eyes of faith, attempting to read the signs of our time in the light of the source of love and life that has called us to be responsible stewards as we commit ourselves to acts of love, compassion, peace and justice. These poems were written during my time as a student, teacher, pastor, ecumenical and community worker in the Philippines, as a missionary in Nepal, teacher, wife, mother, and as a cultural worker in Denmark, stretching a period of more than twenty years. I offer this book of poems to those who seek life, to those who despair, and to those who want to be inspired. Christian spirituality is in the human heart in its encounter with the wounded and resurrected Christ. In celebrating beauty and human creativity, I have illustrated some poems with my own paintings done during my integration process as a foreigner in Denmark. (EPO)
