Leona Samish, a single American woman of a "certain age" takes a long-planned European vacation from her job as a secretary and finds herself in a pensione in Venice, Italy. At a street market, she meets the handsome proprietor Renato DiRossi, entering into a casual flirtation which turns into an affair. Her complacency is jolted when she discovers he is married, has several children and is quite happy with the arrangement as is. Long-dormant frustrations and anger come to the surface as Leona faces the harsh reality of this new found infatuation and her own romantic notions of love. Shirley Booth and later Katharine Hepburn ("Summertime") played the leading role.

Namiko is the most famous novel by Tokutomi Roka, considered the "Japanese Tolstoy", who was the first known Japanese novelist in Spain at the beginning of the last century. Following the dramatic plot of this true story, Roka describes the extreme submission situation of Japanese women at the end of the 19th century and claims for her a leading role as the protagonist of her own life. Namiko, beloved daughter of General Kataoka, is happily married to Marine Ensign Takeo Kawashima. It is not about the usual arranged marriage but about a couple united by true ties of love. Despite having to endure the aloof behavior and jealousy of her stepmother and the cruelty and bitterness of her mother-in-law, Mrs. Kawashima, the young woman is happy. But soon the happiness fades due to her illness: Namiko suffers from tuberculosis. From that moment the plot of the novel centers on the incessant efforts of the in-laws to force Namiko to accept a divorce that she does not want, and the desperate fight of the young woman against this situation.
