To conceive the entrance of the individual to the culture, Bruner proposes the idea of an education susceptible to adapt a culture to the needs its members and to adapt its members and their manners to teach the needs the culture. According to him, "our actions are guided by values, standards which, far from being "natural", are cultural and "symbolic constructions" (Bruner, in 1999). He conceives the human development as a process of collaboration between child and adult, the adult being envisaged as mediator of the culture. This book discusses the international perspectives, as well as the impacts on the workplace and educational challenges of cultural diversity. Topics include naming and planning to overcome barriers to parent involvement in pre-service teachers' online discussions; factors influencing students' perceptions of training in cultural diversity competence; inclusion in higher education; how culturally diverse classrooms respond to instructional technologies; immigrants; moving toward a culture of diversity; culture diversity and identity; infotainment system features set adaptation to target cultures; and using teaching practices that motivate culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) nursing students to learn and succeed in their studies.

Education is a thoroughly political enterprise. The process of determining the purpose of education has always been highly controversial. It has resulted in disputes that have not only divided people philosophically, but also on the basis of religion, region, class, race, and ethnicity. As a result, education provides us with a spectacular arena in which to explore the tensions inherent in European and North American societies, as well as an understanding of how current politics shape education policy. This book focuses on the politics of education, relating to the formation of national identities as affected by globalization and multiculturalism. It assesses the ways in which governance institutions, political ideologies and competing interests, both within and outside of the education community, influence the content, form, and functioning of education. As a collection of studies of the political aspects of education and educational policy-making, this book reaffirms that educational phenomena reflect and inevitably serve specific political agendas. Political scientists, sociologists and education scholars will find this to be an important and valuable text.

This book analyses the experiences of multicultural education in nine very different international settings uncovering insights from a vast variety of educational contexts. Taking a multi-critical approach in reporting and discussing problems faced by increasingly multicultural and multilingual societies the nine case studies reflect radically different assumptions about what counts as ‘ difference’ and what should be the appropriate ways for education systems to respond to differences. While each country’s approach seems unique, analysis of the divergent treatments of internal population diversity elicits a genuinely global instance of the increasingly shared phenomenon of cultural pluralism. Discussing various successes and failures of policy enactment, theory, pedagogy and management of diversity, the book isolates both the differences and similarities in the unique geopolitical and socio-historical contexts of the countries investigated. A key value of the book is that it greatly expands the range of settings, experiences, epistemologies, ontologies and practical experiences that are typically encountered in mainstream discussion of what counts as 'multicultural education'. In effect, all societies are in some way ‘dealing with difference’ – this volume helps widen the scope of reflection and thus facilitates increased, global ‘learning from difference’.
