British Museum. Add. MSS. 34,209. Octavo. The MS. contains the Pars œstivalis and Pars vernalis i.e. from Advent to Easter with the exception of 5 leaves lost at the beginning and 1 after f. 22. The passage selected is taken from the 2nd Sunday in Advent and contains the Psalmellus "A summo cœlo" to a melody which is apparently the origin of the Gregorian Gradual to the same words. The notes throughout the MS. are finely written on a staff of three lines, which are scratched on the vellum, with an additional line occasionally inserted between two of the original ones. All the letters from a to g are used in turn as signatures, the f line being coloured red, the c yellow and, occasionally, the b green. Plate II. - Leaf from the Winchester Ethelred Troper of the 10th century. Bodleian Library - Bodley 775. Octavo. At the fifth line begins the Kyrie Jesu Redemptor, and at the ninth the Kyrie, Rex Splendens. Plate III. - Leaf from a Gradual of the 12th century from S. Alban's Abbey. British Mus. - 2 B iv. The volume is a fine example of English Illumination, and was apparently written for a member of the Royal Family. It afterwards came into the possession of the Howard family, probably through John Fox, whose name is on the flyleaf, and who was tutor in 1546 to Thomas Howard, afterwards 4th Duke of Norfolk.
