Excerpt from Commentary on the Epistles of St. John Dr. Liicke has given a German version of St. John's Epistles, along with his Commentary: the Translator perceived that justice could not be done to the Doctor's work, without translating this version: it is a version of such a Greek text as Dr. Liicke has deliberately adopted, and is also in conformity with the interpretation given in the Commentary. It is, in many instances, much more clear and perspicuous than the ver sion of the English Bible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Expositor's Bible: The Epistles of St. John Since that period I have frequently turned again to these Epistles - subsequent reflection or study not seldom filling in gaps in my knowledge, or leading me to modify former interpretations. When invited last year to resume my Old work, I therefore embraced willingly the opportunity which was presented to me. Excerpt from The Gospel, Epistles, and Revelation of St. John: Edited, With an Introduction and Notes The application of this principle to the present case seems to follow naturally from what has already been said. St. John's work is a gospel: accordingly, like the other gospels, it will be made up of the the Acts and Sayings of Jesus. But its prologue has set forth a very special pur pose for the narrative the support of a theological position. In accordance with this we find, as a fact, that the 'acts of Jesus become in St. John's narrative 'signs, ' and the 'sayings' are all of the nature of 'witness.' From this point of view the work falls into natural divisions: seven incidents constitute the Earlier Signs and Witness of Jesus, seven more his Signs and Witness to the Jews; four divisions comprise the Signs and Witness among his own Disciples, and the three phases of the final Passion and Resurrection history may again be treated as Signs and Witness. Excerpt from The Epistles of St. John What sort of man in disposition John was, we can judge in part from the fact that our Lord, who called Simon Rock-man, called him and his brother Sons of Thunder. The mild, sentimental young man depicted by the artists must be as unlike as possible to the real rugged young fisherman, with his passionate soul. This man, then, passed through profound experiences in the school of the great prophet, John the Baptist, and thereafter in the deeper school of Jesus of Nazareth. We hear of special experiences which were his, not shared by all the apostles - how Peter and James and John con stituted a sort of inner circle among the Twelve, how the zeal of the Sons of Thunder in particular was rebuked and their ambition quenched, ' how John was singled out (if indeed it be he) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Half-Hours With St. John's Epistles The similarity of the Epistle and the Gospel and their dissimilarity also will be seen when we study a passage in each containing the same fundamental truth: And this is life eternal, that they should know thee, the only true God, and him whoi'h thou didst send, even Jesus Christ. (john xvii. Here eternal life is the progressive recog nition of God through an increasing knowledge of His Son. The Gospel gives the historic revelation of God. But the Epistle goes further, And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding.
