“Exiles” is a 1918 play in three acts by Irish writer James Joyce. Started just after the outbreak of WWI in 1914, it is essentially a study of a husband-and-wife relationship which harks back to the final story in “Dubliners” and forward to his magus opus “Ulysses”. James Augustine Aloysius Joyce (1882–1941) was an Irish short story writer, novelist, teacher, poet, and literary critic. "Exiles: A Play in Three Acts" by James Joyce follows four players and two couples, Richard Rowan, a writer and his "common-law wife" Bertha, and Robert Hand with his cousin and previous lover Beatrice, both old friends of the previous couple. Richard, a writer, returns to Ireland from Rome with Bertha, the mother of his illegitimate son, Archie. While there, he meets his former lover and correspondent Beatrice Justice and former drinking partner and now successful journalist Robert Hand. Robert was also Beatrice's lover, and here the complications begin.

At the start of the 21st century, assessments of the last 100 years of literary accomplishment place Joyce, and in particular Ulysses, at the top of the pile.
