Excerpt from The Filtration of Public Water-Supplies There are three principal methods of securing a good water supply for a large city. The first consists of damming a stream from an uninhabited or but sparsely inhabited watershed, thus forming an impounding reservoir. This method is extensively used in England and in the United States. In the latter most of the really good and large Supplies are so obtained. It is only applicable to places having suitable watersheds within a reason. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Extracts From Reports Upon Pure Water Supply for the City of Ottawa, 1911 We find the Water of the Ottawa River, which is the pres ent source of supply, to be polluted and unfit for a public supply either at the present intake or at any other point where the intake could reasonably be placed. We are of the opinion that the pollution will increase and not diminish. The Hypochlorite treatment now in use greatly improves the supply by destroying the bacteria. It does not remove the color or other organic impurities. In other words it disinfects but does not clean up the water as must be done in order to make it acceptable as a public water supply. For these rea sons its use must be considered a temporary measure and not a permanent solution of the water problem. No system of sand filtration, either simple or multiple without chemical treatment. Is capable of removing the colour and the excessive amount of organic matter in the Ottawa River water. Excerpt from Report on the Filtration of River Waters: For the Supply of Cities, as Practised in Europe, Made to the Board of Water Commissioners of the City of St. Louis Gentlemen: In obedience to instructions received from the Board of Water Commissioners in December, 1865 (see Appendix), I have visited Europe for the purpose of understanding the modes in practice there for the filtration or clarification on a large scale of river waters, where these are made use of for domestic purposes in the supply of cities. To this end I have visited the cities of Genoa, and Leghorn, in Italy; of Marseilles, Toulouse, Lyons, Tours, Angers, and Nantes in France; of Berlin, Hamburgh, and Altona in North Germany, and of London, Leicester, York, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Perth, and Dublin in Great Britain. I submit herewith statements descriptive of the modes of filtration in use at each of these places. The obtaining of this information has occupied much more time than I had anticipated. In many places it was found impossible to get at all the details and statistics which were desirable, without a larger expenditure of time and money than your instruct ions, however liberally construed, would have warranted. What may be wanting, however, in the description of one place will generally be found in another. No one but the superintendent or engineer of each work, who had watched the process of filtration from year to year, could give minutely all the experience which each place learns for itself. The process, however, unless where the areas were incommensurate with the service, was in England everywhere successful. The conditions were simple, well recognized, and easily understood; and when, as in two instances particularly, they were violated, it was but temporarily - the increase of area required being acknowledged, and being about to be corrected.
