Excerpt from The Future of South America Owing to the many exceedingly useful books on Latin America already published, I hesitate somewhat in preparing another. Most if not all of the books now issued, however, are written either for the traveler or the historian, without special appeal to commercial and industrial interests. In view of this I have, during the past few years, been systematically collecting information regarding Latin America which should be of service to those looking at this continent from a moneymaking, rather than from an historical, point of view. Although I have personally visited most of the countries of South America, I do not pose as a traveler. My visits have been short, on strictly business missions, and some of the cities about which I have written pages I have been in but a short time. Therefore I do not attempt to compete with the seasoned traveler nor the man who has spent many years in these southern republics. On the other hand, experience with statistics has taught me that often the man who sees countries at a distance, one in comparison with another, gets a truer perspective than one who has spent his life in a given spot. Excerpt from Getting Together With Latin America IN preparing this book no attempt has been made to go into all the details of Latin Ameri can trade, and other conditions, or to prepare a complete and analytical treatise on our past, present and future relations with the republics of South and Central America. To do that would require not one, but many, volumes, each far more comprehensive than the present work, for an entire book might be devoted to the business conditions in each republic. Al though conditions, customs and affairs differ greatly in the various countries of Latin America, yet the same generalities prevail, with but few exceptions, and I have endeavored to treat of matters in a broad and comprehensive manner without the finer distinctions which would relate to individual republics. Excerpt from Across Unknown South America, Vol. 1 of 2 South America is, to my mind, the Coming Conti nent -the Continent of the future. Everybody knows the wealth of the Argentine, Peru, Chile, and Bolivia; but the interior of Brazil, the largest and richest country of all, not unlike forbidden Tibet, was perhaps better known a century or two ago than now. Few people realize that Brazil is larger than the United States of North America, Germany, Portugal, and a few other countries taken together. The interior is practically a term incognita - although the ancient Jesuits and, at a later date, escaped slaves and native rubber collectors have perhaps found their way inland to a considerable distance.
