Contains opinions and comment on other currently published newspapers and magazines, a selection of poetry, essays, historical events, voyages, news (foreign and domestic) including news of North America, a register of the month's new publications, a calendar of forthcoming trade fairs, a summary of monthly events, vital statistics (births, deaths, marriages), preferments, commodity prices. Samuel Johnson contributed parliamentary reports as "Debates of the Senate of Magna Lilliputia."

The Gentleman's Magazine, often considered the first magazine, was one of the most famous and successful periodicals of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Edited by such luminaries as Edward Cave, Samuel Johnson and John Nichols it was always solid and serious, its position eventually being usurped by the Edinburgh Review and Quarterly Review. The chief hindrances to scholars who would like to explore this vast treasure-house are both its size and the unavailability of complete sets. In addition the lack of an adequate index or other means of reference prevents systematic inquiry on specific subjects. These disadvantages are overcome with the publication of The Gentleman's Magazine Library. Collected together are all the articles of value which have appeared in the Magazine from its first publication in 1731 to the year 1868 when another change in editorship signalled a further change of focus towards popular literature.
