This is a warm and engaging Christmas story set during the Great Depression. Rebecca is nine years old when her large, close-knit family moves into a tarpaper farm house in Wisconsin. Because times are hard, she does not find the porcelain doll she had hoped for under the Christmas tree. Instead, her mother surprises her with a thick gingerbread doll named Button Marie, which she loves 'in a way you could never love anything from a store.' . . . These paintings (which are reminiscent of the work of Andrew Wyeth) convey a strong sense of the affection that pervades the family over the generations. The emphasis on such familiar things as family storytelling and rituals makes this a slice of Americana that the picture book crowd can savor.--ALA Booklist Lloyd's sharply observed realistic watercolors--in a palette somewhat grayed as if to recall old b&w photos--beautifully reflect this well-told story's warmth and focus on essential values.--Kirkus Reviews

The Gingerbread Girl is a pastiche of 'Oliver Twist' by Charles Dickens, which was published in monthly instalments in 1837. The twist is that the heroine, thirteen year old Amy Watkins, better known to her friends as Ginge, is no victim like Oliver, but a very feisty young lady. The novel should appeal to girl readers between the ages of 9-12 years and is a Christmas book. The date is November and December 1875 and Amy is an orphan living in Bethnal Green in the East End of London. Her seven year old brother Billy, for whom she has sole responsibility, is very sick and in the workhouse school hospital in Leytonstone. Amy bakes gingerbread girls and sells them at Bethnal Green market as a means to survive. She pays rent for a small room in a lodging house, where she has access to the cooking range in the basement kitchen. Elsa, her landlady, threatens Amy with eviction if she does not run her errands. As few houses had ranges, Amy does what Elsa wants and is drawn, unawares, into a criminal underworld of burglary and art forgery. John Constable's work is said to be easy to forge, so once it is plain that Amy has artistic talent, she inadvertently copies parts of his paintings. She befriends Sweep, a road sweeper, one of a community of characters who live cheek by jowl in the lodging house, and with his help, and support from the other lodgers, she tries to look after Billy and find an escape from the criminals.

Poppets are dolls used for sympathetic magic, and are designed in the likeness of individuals in order to represent them in spells to help, heal or harm. The word poppet comes from the Middle Ages in England, originally meaning a small doll or child, and it is still in use today as a name of endearment. The term is older than the phrase ‘Voodoo doll’. Pagan Portals – Poppets and Magical Dolls explores the history of poppets and offers a practical guide to making and using them in modern witchcraft. It also covers seasonal dolls, from Brigid dolls, used in celebrations for the first stirrings of spring, to fairy dolls enjoyed in tree-dressing at Yuletide. Other topics covered include spirit dolls, ancestor dolls and dolls as representations of mythological beings and creatures from folklore. The newest book from Lucya Starza, author of Every Day Magic: A Pagan Book of Days.
