The Golden Feathers

The Bird with the Golden Feather is about sticking to your convictions no matter what the price. Leaders are like eagles. They do not flock, you find them one at a time. This is what little Bird learns. She chooses to be true to her decisions. It does not always mean you fit in with everyone else.

As a day ends and the horizon transforms into a dark crimson hue, a mother pigeon tells her children a bedtime story that she hopes will not only make them sleepy, but will also prepare them for life. In her mind, stories are the best way to encourage her chicks to metaphorically fly, before they technically spread their wings. As her tale of good versus evil concludes, Mother Sue kisses her birdies goodnight with the hope they will all live a good life. But the general mood within the cage is bleak amid the uncertainty that hangs over them like a dark cloud. As the king they serve heartlessly plots within his hall, not far from the room in which they and their beloved caretaker, Francis, reside, it is not long before he delivers a fiery speech that prompts Francis to wake the pigeons, open their cage, strap an anonymous letter to one of the birds, and release him into the wild. But as the birds continue their important missions of delivering messages, they cannot help but begin questioning their roles in the lives of humans seemingly intent on committing more atrocities. In this fairy tale, a family of feathered messengers attempts to fulfill their important purpose while serving an evil king.

This book is about Mr. Biggels that always knew there were golden feathers on the mountain of hope and to get there it would be the journey of his life now it would not be easy. But he knew that if he would not give up on hope he would be able to reach the golden feathers that were priceless and he would become a rich man. He knew he had to struggle most of his little life and he would not have his dreams unless he found the Golden Feathers that was on the mountain of hope. Then he knew everything would fall in place once he got a bag full of them. Now he had to go through a lot to get to this mountain of hope but it was his attitude that would bring him there and if he was nice it brought him close but, if he was mean it took him longer to get there and it would bring out strange creatures that would give him a hard time to get there so you know what little children it is your attitude they watch now days so try and have a positive one.

Feathers is a Bluebird with an appetite for seeds and for flying adventures. It was the cold winter wind full of sleet and ice that flung him unexpectedly to the other end of the valley and to the Forbidden Forest. He now faces the unknown and perhaps death. He is a dedicated “responsible” family bird full of morals and purpose. He may never see his family again. His family ethics and principals are weighed and tested in this story. The Golden Spruce Tree Seed has purpose also, as he tries to dig his roots into the ground to make him the tallest tree in the forest and to make his parents, who stand above him, proud. He is facing death head-on! The words of his parents, “you are not dead until you rot” seem an aimless and distant phrase. He knows he needs heat and sunlight to fulfill his dreams of touching the clouds and the top of the sky. How these two dissimilar personalities challenge each other in the midst of mean ol’ crooked trees, raging rivers, the slicing knives, and vermin who would like to see both of our characters on their dinner plate, gives parents who like to read to their young children, and young persons already maturing into life’s challenges, a vehicle by which the lessons of patience can be taught and exemplified with fun and good story. Teachers also may find this a neat story to use in the class room leisure reading. In a present time when the challenges of leaving nest and home and family to discover one’s own destiny are met with the fear of the unknown in life’s toy store that has such overwhelming careers in each isle, in packages not yet opened...the hope that the author is trying to impart is that; life taken one step at a time, until the mountain is taken and defeated, is the way of all heroes and heroines. The bumps in the road are only meant as impediments if the traveler falls. They keep that person from sliding unabated to the bottom of the mountain to have to start all over again. Doors we selfishly want to open and that slam shut on us, only open new doors of much more worthy challenges and pleasures. There is always hope in the next day’s sunrise if we lead our lives in a good way. This is a story that tries to teach that no one ever got to the top of the mountain in one giant leap! Nor was the true destiny and ever continuing story of Feathers and the Golden Spruce Tree to be learned for many hundreds of years later, after this story began.
