In the Nightside—that hidden area in the middle of London where time stands still at three A.M. and the sun won’t rise to refute it—nightmares go walking in borrowed flesh, and not everything that looks back at you with human eyes is really human. I’m John Taylor, a PI with a knack for finding things, helping those the Nightside has chewed up and is about to spit out. All things considered, my life lately had been bright, even in this shadowy place. So it was only a matter of time before everything hit the fan. Walker—the powerful, ever-present, never-to-be-trusted agent who runs the Nightside on behalf of the Authorities—paid me a visit. He told me he is dying and that he, too, has a job for me. An important job. His.

With only a few days left at the Police Academy Jake Newton thought the hard slog was all but over. He soon discovered that being a Copper in Australia's largest city was definitely no walk in the park. Not only was the work rugged, he had to contend with the partying and that was even harder! How was he expected to juggle that as well as put the moves on the little glamour he'd just met? Newton would soon cross paths with 'The Company' and the notorious Mr. Deep. Just what was it about Deep that frightened so many others? And how did the illegal Casino figure into all this? Was there a connection between Deep, the Casino and the Drug manufacturing warehouses? And why were there so many suicides at The Gap lately? Oh yes... for young Newton the worst was yet to come... The main Police character somehow finds the time to impress and hook up with a glamorous female singer. The singer innocently introduces him to the mysterious 'Mr. Deep' not knowing he is a major player in 'The Company'. Her companion, whilst rubbing shoulders with members of the so called 'high society' makes an interesting discovery when observing several of the organized crime figures he's already looking into are at the very same party. The book explores how the young police and syndicate members inevitably cross paths. 'The Boys' decide to take on some investigating in their own time. The players soon discover that they are being watched and subsequently take action by ensuring somebody disappears. This only heightens the eagerness of the other young Police to expose what is really going on in Sydney. Their surveillance operations escalate and culminate in a confrontation between 'The Good' and 'The Bad'. From organized murderous hits to alleged suicides... from major drug deals to Drag Queens and Bank accountants... corruption goes all the way to the top... there's blackmail... an Illegal Casino... and a variety of stand-over tactics... and all in a day's work. From top class restaurants to Hotel Counter meals... from alcohol binge sessions to late night strip clubs and wishful sexual confrontations... there's even a Gay Night Club... and the young police are exposed to the lot in their quest to identify those individuals responsible...

Vampires have secretly grown wealthy behind the scenes for centuries, involved in monumental tasks such as overthrowing governments, and mundane ones like running local strip clubs. But instead of viewing things from afar, they like to plunging headfirst into debauchery themselves. In modern times, the sexy unofficial vampire boss gets in deep trouble after her group's move to St. Louis. Along with her right hand vamp "Scummy" (who battles an eternal hangover, an everlasting erection and extreme lack of couth) and a cast of other assorted degenerates, they must prepare for one last battle against an old antagonist from days past. None of this is made easier by the training of new "rookie" vampire, a local St. Louis "hoosier", along the way. Imagine if vampires were far more human than anyone gives them credit for but too rich, too bored, and too immortal to play by any of the rules.

Sigmund Freud’s essay 'The Uncanny' is celebrating a century since publication. It is arguably his greatest and most fruitful contribution to the study of culture and the environment. Environmental Humanities and the Uncanny brings into the open neglected aspects of the uncanny in this famous essay in its centenary year and in the work of those before and after him, such as Friedrich Schelling, Walter Benjamin, E. T. A. Hoffmann and Bram Stoker. This book does so by focussing on religion, especially at a time and for a world in which some sectors of the monotheisms are in aggressive, and sometimes violent, contention against those of other monotheisms, and even against other sectors within their own monotheism. The chapter on Schelling’s uncanny argues that monotheisms come out of polytheism and makes the plea for polytheism central to the whole book. It enables rethinking the relationships between mythology and monotheistic and polytheistic religions in a culturally and politically liberatory and progressive way. Succeeding chapters consider the uncanny cyborg, the uncanny and the fictional, and the uncanny and the Commonwealth, concluding with a chapter on Taoism as a polytheistic religion. Building on the author’s previous work in Environmental Humanities and Theologies in bringing together theories of religion and the environment, this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of the environmental humanities, ecocultural studies and religion.

Published to coincide with Brazil hosting the 2014 World Cup, here is the lowdown on Brazil, its people, places and lifestyles. A’Barrow’s book is a combination of notebook, anecdote and travelogue, written from the staunchly personal perspective of an English man who married a Brazilian woman and has spent years learning about the mysteries of Brazilian culture. Anyone expecting a sanitised account of only those things that shine in Brazilian life will be advised to look elsewhere. This is an often hilarious ‘warts-and-all’ portrait of a country that is seen by many as the essence of Latin America. Not for the faint-hearted or the easily offended, it will give first-time visitors the essential information they need to get by in the beautiful, exotic and infuriating country that the author clearly loves with all his heart. Stephen A’Barrow worked for many years in the British and international education sectors, travelling throughout Latin America before settling in Brazil’s mountainous Minas Gerais region. He continues to travel to pursue his business interests, as well as writing about history and culture. He lives in Swanage, Dorset.
